I just wanted to say thank you so much for showing us how to reset the Taskbar Notification icons. When I installed the Windows updates for April, KB4018483 installed McAfee instead of the update for Adobe Flash Player. Kaspersky removed it immediately but I was stuck with a McAfee icon. Your bat file not only fixed that but cleaned up some other unneeded icons as well. It was just what i needed.

I was so delighted to find this thread and "cure"... but it didn't help Windows 10 with Creators Update (but not Fall, yet, on that machine). One program (SyMenu) acquired as its tray icon the icon of some other program (not sure what), and this did not cure it. Have newer releases of Windows 10 added new places where icons are cached? I ran this as a normal user, does it need to be run as administrator?

I would try as administrator but that may not work either. You could try uninstalling the program with the wrong icon and then reinstall it again and see if that fixes it. The only other option is a reg hack but icons do not show in the registry under the name of the program so unless you know exactly what to delete, you could find yourself in a huge mess. To make matters worse, the icon is not stored in the same place as the actual program. Fingers crossed that a reinstall works.

Is it possible to make a backup of the settings? Please see my post here for the reasons.

    Hello Doctorjellybean, :)

    Yes, you sure can.

The notification area icons cache for each user account is located as the IconStreams and PastIconsStream binary values in the registry key below.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

You can export these two registry values as your backup.

To restore them, you would have to kill the "explorer" process, merge the exported .reg files, and restart the computer to apply. If you like, using the "Restart Explorer with Pause" from the added context menu below can help make it easy to kill "explorer".
