File Icons Changed by new program installation

    Hello All!
After installing a new program I had various file associations and icons changed. No surprises there. I've manually corrected the file associations to my liking, but still have many wrong icons.
Per this thread I downloaded and ran "To Rebuild the Icon Cache using a BAT file" followed by a restart with no success.
Before I go too far, is this the next appropriate move: "If the icons are still not displaying properly after rebuilding the icon cache, then download and merge the .reg file for the .ico (ICO) option here to restore the default associations of .ico (icon) files in Windows 10"?
    Thanks very much! :)

    Hello JD, :)

It won't hurt anything to see if restoring the default association for .ico files may help, but I don't think it will in your case.

Some programs may override the icon you try to assign to its file types.

    Thanks Brink,
    I'll give it a shot.
FWIW: I installed WPS Office which changed Word, Excel ... and Adobe .pdf icons. Know these details do you have any other thoughts?
    Thanks Again!

I'm afraid not, but you might create a new thread about the custom icons to see if someone may know more to help.

Rebuild Icon Cache in Windows 10

    Good morning Brink,
When I returned to my computer last night after several hours of (computer) sleep I found my .pdf icons had returned to normal.

My Office icons remained unchanged since my install of WPS Office. Research suggested I try an "Office Repair" which ran normally, but with no success.
    ...
I just started to 'restore the default associations of .ico files and found the link (apparently) is just for Windows 8/8.1:
"7. If the icons are still not displaying properly after rebuilding the icon cache, then download and merge the .reg file for the .ico (ICO) option here to restore the default associations of .ico (icon) files in Windows 10."
Here: Default File Associations - Restore in Windows 8
Has this "Warning: These default file associations should only be used in Windows 8 and 8.1."
Should I go elsewhere for Windows 10?
Or do you think I'd just be wasting my time and just create a new thread about the custom icons to see if someone may know more to help as you suggested yesterday.
    Thanks!

    Good morning. :)

You can use Option Two below for Windows 10 default associations instead.

    Hello again Brink,
I don't see any Office extensions in the list. My only issue is with .doc/.docx & .xls/.xlsx (so far).
    Is worth running anyway?
    Thx! :)

It wouldn't be worth doing since it wouldn't affect those.

Customization Rebuild Icon Cache in Windows 10

    "Solved"
I went with the "best" solution: Uninstalled WPS Office and ran a System Restore to a date prior to the installation.
Thanks to all who supported me in this misadventure! :)
