Rebuild Icon Cache in Windows 10  

Hey Shawn,

Do you know what is up with Windows 10 1703 and the Icon Cache? I have never seen it corrupted so frequently. It has become almost a daily occurrence. I am about ready to put a shortcut on my Desktop to rebuild the icon cache.

It has become almost intolerable for me. It is usually Internet shortcut icons (which by their nature can be problematic over time) turning to blue globes, but I also have a Mail icon in Quick Launch which frequently just turns white.

I'm having the same issue. I have Shawns "Rebuild_Icon_Cache.bat" file on my desktop already. Closing and restarting the individual programs will fix the icons one by one but the .bat file is faster and easier.

For me it's three out of 9 of the icons in the systray. Realtek HD Audio Manager, Windows Firewall Control, and Razer Synapse. The Realtek actually changes to an older style of the icon, the other two get blurry.

I do have my user and system variables set to folders on my ramdrive so that they "auto clean" every time I reboot but I don't think that would make a difference as the icon cache is not located in temp.

PS I've been told by M$ that the temp folders need to be located on physical drives for any windows updates that require a reboot.

The reason the icons in my systray keep getting corrupted is the automatic dpi scaling

I can recreate it 100%. R Click desktop, select 'Display settings'. Change "scale and layout" to anything but 100% then change it back, bingo, blurry icons in the systray.

Now what's happening during actual PC use is I'm playing games at higher then native (1920x1080) resolution using Nvidia DSR.

This is triggering the automatic scaling to jump to 125% on it's own. As a side effect the wallpaper (spanning two monitors) greatly increases in scale and no longer fits on the secondary monitor.

Now I just need to find a way to disable dpi scaling system wide with a single setting since I am unable to set compatibility mode for explorer.exe.

The tool linked to at the end of the following post fixes this issue for me.

Is it possible to check for corruption before deleting the cache?
