How to Turn On or Off the Favorites Bar in Microsoft Edge in Windows 10
Microsoft Edge is a new web browser that is available across the Windows 10 device family. It is designed for Windows 10 to be faster, safer, and compatible with the modern Web.
The favorites bar is a toolbar in Microsoft Edge that you can add your favorite websites you visit frequently on to make opening them faster and more convenient.
Starting in in Windows 10 Insider Preview build 10565, your favorites in Microsoft Edge are now stored in an ESE database file instead of the previous Favorites folder.

Starting with Windows 10 build 17063 (announced in Windows 10 build 17074) the Favorites Bar will now always automatically show on Start and New tab pages, if you have at least one favorite in it. When you navigate, the Favorites Bar will automatically hide to give you the most space for browsing. You may still choose to always show the favorites bar if you wish, via a context menu on the favorites bar “Show bar”, or via settings “Show the favorites bar”. The Favorites bar also now supports hiding names for individual favorite bar items, instead of having to either hide none or all names.
This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off the favorites bar to show in Microsoft Edge for your account in Windows 10.
- Option One: To Turn On or Off Microsoft Edge Favorites Bar in Microsoft Edge Settings

- Option Three: To Turn On or Off Microsoft Edge Favorites Bar using a REG file
EXAMPLE: Favorites Bar in Microsoft Edge
1. Open the Microsoft Edge app.
2. Click/tap on the More actions button at the top right corner, and click/tap on Settings. (see screenshot below)
3. Under Favorites bar, turn On (default) or Off Show the favorites bar for what you want. (see screenshot below)
This option is only available starting with Windows 10 build 17063.
1. Open the Microsoft Edge app.
2. Right click or press and hold on the favorites bar, and click/tap on Hide bar. (see screenshot below)

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

4. Save the .reg file to your desktop.
5. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.
6. When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.
7. If Microsoft Edge is currently open, then close and reopen Microsoft Edge to apply.
8. You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

Hello Shawn I have taken the easy route by just upgrading a plain install of 7 Pro and I am not going to add my email or a lot of programs to it until I am sure of finding my way around.
Two things I want to ask is having set the favourites bar is there a way of minimizing the pasted favourite on that bar like we do in 7?
The other is using Classic Shell going to mess with the system too much as I am still not overly keen on the "app/panel look" for example it seems to be a convoluted way around to open Control panel just to what Programs and features I have - if there is such a thing now?

You could have favorites in folders on the Favorites bar if you like.

I don't use Classic Shell though since I try to keep my system at default for tutorial purposes.

Ok Shawn I will try Classic Shell as I really cannot get used to the panel views and another little problem is that I installed Chrome because the Edge search screen has too may "things" going on in it but opening it (Chrome) from the taskbar icon presents me with an annoying bar along the top of the Chrome screen with a search panel in it and I cannot get rid of it.
But it certainly appears to be quicker than the 7 install and I will keep persevering plus I must look to see if you have done an optimise tutorial for it as that is my bible in 7

I'll try Derek when I get home as I am away at the moment on my 7 machine and I have to relearn how to post screen shots again as it is quite different I remember from the 7 method

Suggestion 3 worked, but only temporarily. Is there a permanent fix??
First: This problem started only after the latest update -- and EVERY SINGLE update causes multiple problems!
I tried each of your suggestions; the first 2 did not work, so I was delighted when the 3rd one did. However, the 'fix' was only temporary: that is, upon opening Edge, no 'Favorites Bar' appeared, but as soon as I clicked on 'New Tab', it was back again. I just don't want it there at all, and see no benefit of having it taking up room. Has anyone found any other solutions that are permanent? Thanks so much for new suggestions.
