I'm glad that it could help for that. :)

    Hello Greg, :)

I haven't tested this in Windows 10, but it should work the same.

I'm not sure whether this is the best place to post this, but if an extension you need isn't listed, you can get it listed by right-clicking a file with that extension and selecting "Open with". The rest of the process is probably explained in another tutorial.

Does anybody know what to do when the "always use this app to open etc." checkbox is missing in the "open with" dialog? I've always re-associated file types in this way. Right-click on the file, "open with", "always use etc." But on my Laptop with a fresh Windows 10 installation, the checkbox is just not there. Why is that?

Edited to add: Nevermind, it finally worked. I went to Default Apps in the system settings to associate MKV files with Media Player Classic, and now the checkbox shows up too in the "open with" dialog. Of course now I don't need it anymore Just another Windows hiccup.

For those of us that are less sophisticated in our technical understanding, or just plain stupid users (buy hey, we fund these operating systems by purchasing them) is there an example of how to use this? I am trying to associate .trec files with Camtasia Studio.

Interestingly, I have used Windows 10 for a considerable period of time now as well as using Camtasia, but just today, Windows 10 announces to me that it determined some problem with a file association and changed a default. Now, I cannot click on a .trec file and open it. I tried a repair operation on the installed software, with no effect.

.trec file types do not show up in the "Set Associations" dialog in the control panel.
Nor does the Camtasia application appear in the "Set Default Programs" dialog, though it does appear in the "Programs and Features" dialog.

Seems like my next step may need to be to try to uninstall and reinstall, but I get tired of doing that these days with apps and even the OS itself. Windows 10 is certainly NOT for the faint of heart. I am tempted to start dissecting the registry with a comparison against Windows 7 to sort it all out, but I have a day job already.

Thanks though, I am a big fan of Win 7 and Win 10 tutorials!

Easiest method I find is to right click on the file .trec in your case and click on the Open With option this should show any programs that have previously been used to open these files and an option to Find an app in the store or choose another app Navigate to the program EXE file you wish to use and select it

Thanks but it does not offer me the installed program and only offers me the option to shop the Microsoft Application STORE.

Oooops! MY BAD, there's a link that allows me to search the PC.

    Cheers!

*6. To Choose Defaults for Selected Program
doesn't work for me on Windows 10 x64 14393.693 (UAC at max level): I can't switch on/off already selected extensions clicking on the checkmarks. I can only switch on/off unselected extensions. Is this supposed behavior or a bug? What's the logic?

I do find that with a lot of Windows 10 option boxes if the option involves one of the Modern apps then the options for conventional apps is difficult if not impossible to find at all

I do think the "difficulty to remove a selected option may be by "design"

There is a secondary method to select the default option which sometimes is easier to use , Right click on the data file and select properties - you will see an option to select the default.

This may be an idea to try - I cannot say it will do what you want as I find the process to be variable to say the least (also you might try dropping the UAC down one level as the full position can be over protective of any system options )

In the Upgrade (not clean install) from 14393.969 to 15063, during the OOBE phase of UPGRADE, (where you have chosen to keep all your settings and programs), you are encouraged to try Photos, Edge, Groove and Films&TV, instead of your chosen apps and are given little checkboxes (well, er... tick-circles) to, I think, accept Microsoft's choice for you, which when you clear the ticks, finish the upgrade and restart Windows Creator Build, all the Creator's choices are in place, none of yours, and it has become even more difficult to make your own choices stick by the methods in the tut above!

Just going around in Circles here.
