As dalchina mentions in that thread, many people find it easiest to use WinAero Tweaker for the job.

    Welcome to TenForums.

It's really worth making time to browse through the Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every page.
    - At the foot of the Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
    - I download a new copy each month.
    - By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
    - Tutorials are also listed by category at Tutorials - there's also a shortcut to that at the top of every page.
    - Both tutorial lists are searchable.
    - You can also search for TenForumsTutorials in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com/tutorials after your search term. For example,
    taskbar toolbars site:tenforums.com/tutorials

You can search TenForums using the search box in the top-right corner of all TenForums webpages or using Advanced Search - TenForums
    - You can also search TenForums threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com after your search term. For example,
Search for drivers by HardwareID site:tenforums.com
    - [This is what the search box in the top-right corner of TenForums webpages does automatically]

too lazy to edit the registry, so I wrote a book about it instead

Cool! I was about to ask this, but of course it's already a topic here. :)
Since getting back into Windows, my first thought was, "Okay. What is the Registry Key for that?". Mostly because I like this new Opera GX Browser, but the way it saves custom profiles-- which i'd prefer-- it expressly states "not a default-app option" (or some such). Context: I'm all about making a custom commandline w/ args to open.. whatever, on-click, and know that it's possible to get Windows to do it, if it's told so correctly. Then, I realized how lazy I am and generally prefer to avoid trusting myself to pickleball about in the Registry.

Actually, I Googled first and found this and i thought of you guys. But, I knew you'd have something better. He's got 4 ways. You've even reminded me of some (e.g. using File Properties => Default) that I didn't think of, in providing SEVEN ways!

The ever changing layout and menus of Microsoft Windows make even this tutorial useless.

I recently updated and in the default apps I can no longer get my own default apps as they have removed that function respectively if I select i.e. email, the app is not listed there.

How can I get back what I want not what Microsoft wants?

Continued here: frustrating internal changes and modifications with every update

A very helpful program is the

    Default Programs Editor

    (free).

I have also responded to your question about 'Mailto' in the link above.

Bear in mind if programs don't register themselves as handlers for a particular file type or protocol - particularly portable programs - you may need to be a little more ingenious.
