Hello J, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

Usually, the preview pane will use the same default app to open the file with.

What file type is this for?

    What is its default app?

...and what is the preview pane in File Explorer using?

Well the problem got it self resolved but not sure why and how.

    File type: pdf
Default set to Pdf-Xchange and file did and do open properly
But preview was using Pdf-Architect which I do not want but add to have to get a virtual printer.

After contacting PDF-Xchange, they sent me an update and now the preview works.

So not sure if the issue was that
    a) Pdf-Xchange version was not compatible with Win10 or
    b) Win10 assumes that what ever is the last program install for a file type. PDF Architect which I installed last. after the install I had to go to the Default app to reset to PDF-Xchange but the preview remained in PDF-Architect...
in any case I do not see a mean to even change the preview file type and obviously WIN10 was not doing it according to my settings.

Could be, but I'm glad to hear it has sorted itself out.

@Brink seems that Control panel options aren't there anymore in builds 1709 and newer.. (Options 7 and 8)

    Hello @AndreTen,

Yeah, options 7 & 8 no longer work starting with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update version 1709.

    @JMarc106

If you are having issues with Pdf-Xchange and having to add Pdf-Architect just to get a Virtual printer You may want to take a look at Nitro PDF Reader which gives you a reader. convertor, and PDF printer for Free. If you want to carry on with Pdf-Xchange you could try the best Virtual printer for free that I've ever seen which is PDFCreator which does many levels of PDF and also converts other program output to various common Bitmap Graphics formats JPG, PNG etc which can be useful

Oh, I see now, you have notification down under the option. Think it should also be added at the beginning, where options are listed. Just my thought :)

I just discovered the method I normally use in Options 7 & 8 no longer works. This was much better designed, faster and easier to use than the Settings option designed for idiots! How typical of MS to take another step backwards.

You ca create the following shortcuts to restore the previous more useful functionality is restored.

"Set your default programs": control /name Microsoft.DefaultPrograms /page pageDefaultProgram
"Associate a file type or protocol with a program": control /name Microsoft.DefaultPrograms /page pageFileAssoc
I suggest Options 7 & 8 in this Tutorial are updated to show these options.
