Hi Shawn... erm I still beg to differ on this (although admittedly it depends what he has installed :))

The image a couple of posts above this shows my C drive at around 25Gb usage. That is Windows 10 plus hundreds of technical pdf's and data sheets and documents, 1200 photos, around 80 or 90 CD's (as WMA files) + a good selection of programs such as Audacity, Foobar, LTspice, Irfanview Diptrace, LibreOffice etc etc.

And this is a Windows Image of all that. It would all easily fit on a 32Gb drive. Free space is not backed up and no capacity is needed for that.

Macrium (that I switched to after clean installing the Anniversary Update) comes in at around 16Gb with standard default compression.

    Hey Mooly, :)

Yeah, I was just going by that usually 32GB wouldn't be enough to have a Windows System Image saved to.

Thanks for the responses guys. Just to clarify, I have a new laptop without any pics, mp3 etc. Most places I've read from including the HP website state specifically that the USB drive should not be larger than 32gb(I'm not sure on posting external links rules or I'd link the page) However, I still need help with my orginal question, I can't get the Sandisk to show when attempting to create a recovery usb. Upon further researching, other have experienced the same, and the work around is to plug the usb into a 2.0 port( even though the USB is 3.0). The problem is that my laptop does not have any 2.0 ports all 3.0. So does any one have any usb recommendation that works for sure for 3.0 ports on Windows 10. Thank you guys

Ok, I understand now. Yeah, the 32GB USB flash drive will not be large enough to save a system image to. It'll need to be at least the same size as the hard drive Windows is installed on.
For clarity, actually as large as the data stored on the hdd - not the drive size itself. In practice the backup image will be smaller than the size of backed up data as the image is compressed.

If the Drive is not bootable it is not suitable to use as a Recovery drive , I just returned a 3pack of Verbatim Go USB3 Drives as none were seen by the Bios/UEFI but all happily worked in windows.

Try the USB key connected to a USB2 hub or extension Cable , it may force it to use a USB2 compatible mode perhaps ?

Hi Subzero, you are slightly confused ( which is why Brink is) , a Recovery Drive is not a copy of windows, so you can put it back , just like from the Factory if you need to, you can allow it to save the files required to do a reset , which may or may not get you back to Factory though.

It is basically a rescue disk for startup issues etc. however most laptop usually have a built in Recovery image to put it back to the Factory State.

Why you'd also want a system image is so it will restore Windows AND all your Programs, music, pics etc. A 1 TB External drive will allow you to do that. I would highly recommend Macrium Reflect Free for that.

    KB.
    Thanks Kbird.

So can anyone recommend a drive that will actually work for this purpose for Windows 10 and USB 3.0 ports. I don't want to buy another drive and have the same issues :)

The current one is Sandisk Ultra 32gb 3.0, I'm disappointed in it so will need to return it.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but isn't creating a recovery usb drive the same as system image backup?

    Thanks in advance

No A Recovery Drive is not a System Image , it is used like you would use your DVD (if you had one in Win10) to rescue yourself, if you have a Bad Startup or somthing gets corrupted , in Win10 it will allow you to do a Reset on the Computer though I don't rely on it at all, I still do System Images incase the Recovery (startup) Disk can't fix the issue.

The Recovery Key will allow you to access and restore a system Image if you have made one though.

    Post the HP link...its ok.

I am using 32gb ADATA USB3 drives ,though I realise now I prefer one with a LED which this model doesn't have , though price was good.
