one last time about bios vs uefi, just trying to understand as completely as i can.

    windows intallation:

if uefi is selected windows will be a uefi installation?

if bios is selected windows will be a bios installation?

or neither matters for windows installation?

    thank you for any help.

Windows will install in the mode the firmware is set to. If the firmware is set to UEFI, Windows will install in UEFI mode, which means a GPT partitioned drive booting from and EFI system partition.

If the firmware is legacy BIOS or UEFI set to either legacy BIOS or CSM compatibility mode, then Windows will install in legacy BIOS modes which means an MBR partitioned drive booting from a system partition marked as active.

    Hello,
Great tutorial, but not working on my system. I have a new Windows 10 laptop. When I attempt to "create a system image" Windows cannot find the hard drive to store it on. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Jack,

MS told us not to use their tool a few years ago and to use a third-party system imaging utility instead. This warning is repeated right at the start of this tutorial.

Several imaging utilities are identified in File backup vs imaging, imaging utilities, backing up drivers [post #3] - TenForums If I was only starting out now I'd choose Macrium Reflect.

    All the best,
    Denis

    Welcome to TenForums.

It's really worth making time to browse through the Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every page.
    - At the foot of the Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
    - I download a new copy each month.
    - By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
    - Tutorials are also listed by category at Tutorials - there's also a shortcut to that at the top of every page.
    - Both tutorial lists are searchable.
    - You can also search for TenForumsTutorials in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com/tutorials after your search term. For example,
    taskbar toolbars site:tenforums.com/tutorials

You can search TenForums using the search box in the top-right corner of all TenForums webpages or using Advanced Search - TenForums
    - You can also search TenForums threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com after your search term. For example,
Search for drivers by HardwareID site:tenforums.com
    - [This is what the search box in the top-right corner of TenForums webpages does automatically]

    Got it. Thanks much Denis!

And just fyi, I misinterpreted, owing in part to what looks like a misdirected link. I started at this tutorial: "How to Change the Name of a User Profile Folder in Windows 10," wherein there's a link that says "How to Create and Restore a System Image Backup with Macrium Reflect," but it actually directs to the "How to Create a System Image in Windows 10" page.

Anyhoo, thanks again for the specific insight and for the awesome resources!
    Best!

    Jack,

Thanks for explaining. I've passed that on to the tutorial's author.

    Possible complications

    Window 10 Home
    Hi
I Just noticed in 'View Reliabilty' that I had a 'disc failure' event a couple of days ago.
In light of this I've created a system image to an ext HDD.
Because my (C:) drive was rather small I've been installing software on a secondary HDD (E:) and the system image has included this in the backup.
What I intend to do is to purchase a large SSD & move the whole lot to that.
Is the above arrangement going to complicate things when I want move the contents of (C:) & (E:) to a new SSD?

I am trying to create a Windows 10 Pro System Image. Well..
After a few minutes, the progress bar became red and the error informed me of bad sectors.
I run elevated chkdsk /r/f/i and the process finished ok.
I tried the System Image process again and it stopped at the same spot!

I would appreciate any info available

    Welcome to Ten Forums.

The first thing you need to know is that the built in System Image Backup has been a deprecated feature for over five years. Even Microsoft say you should not use it any more. There is a note to this effect at the head of post #1 in this tutorial.

    Mixcrosoft said:

As recommended by Microsoft, you should be using a third party system image tool. Until recently Macrium Reflect Free would have been a top recommendation, but Macrium have now retired their Free version. You can still find downloads for it, such as on MajorGeeks, and it still works. There are other free alternatives.

Restore Comparisons using Macrium Easeus, Aoemei & Hasleo | Windows 11 Forum

However, that's not going to help with the bad sectors, they're all going to see them. Some, such as Reflect, have an option to ignore bad sectors and complete the system image, but use the image at your own risk - it will have some missing sectors that may (or may not) be important.

Chhkdsk said your C:\ drive is healthy, but there are other partitions besides C that need to be included in a system image, such as the recovery partition. Your bad sectors are most likely to be in one of the other partitions.
