How to View Windows Update History in Windows 10

    information   Information
Microsoft releases important updates every second Tuesday once a month, known as Patch Tuesday. However, updates could be released at any time.

By default, Windows 10 will automatically check for and install available Windows Updates at the time you have set in automatic maintenance.

Some updates are not installed automatically. This includes optional updates and updates that require you to accept new terms of use. When these updates are available, Windows Update will let you know that they're ready to be installed.

This tutorial will show you how to view your update history to see which Windows Updates failed or successfully installed on your Windows 10 PC.

    Note   Note
Windows Defender definition updates are no longer listed in Windows Update history. You can view when the last definition update was installed from within Windows Defender in the Update tab.

    Here's How:

    1. Open Settings, and click/tap on the Update & security icon.

    2. Click/tap on the View installed update history link under Update status on the right side. (see screenshot below)

    3. You will now see the history of Windows Update listed in categories. (see screenshots below)
    Note   Note
If you like, click/tap on any one of the "Successfully installed on (date)" links to see more details for that update.

You can also click/tap on the More info link for even more details about the update online at Microsoft.

To view Windows Update events in Event Viewer, you can either create a Custom View Filter in Event Viewer, or click and download the link I've posted with this post, unzip it(you may have to unlock it in properties) and import it to event viewer:

From there after a few days of updating or update failing, you'll have enough to look at and find out what your problems are, by clicking the Details tab:

Windows Update custom view download is under this posting
    Event Viewer Windows Update Custom

Note: After some testing I have found out it also shows if App Store(the old one at least) was updated, not what, but that an update was downloaded. It will not specify what kind of update(App Store or Windows) just that something was updated.

Hi, I realise the update history gets wiped out with a major update like anniversary update. But on my main pc it only lists the last 5 updates for various things going back only to 3rd Sept. Is this normal? I know there were updates between 2nd Aug and 3rd Sept. On our weaker living room pc it shows history more with 'feature update' being the first in the list

    Hello Scotty,

I like to look in Installed Updates in Control Panel to help see them all.

Thanks Shawn. I looked in there too. What is troubling me in both views is the lack of entries. It only shows the most recent couple of KB updates released by MS dating back sept 13. I am sure there have been several since anniversary update was released. At the end of the day it's purely cosmetic, I'm on the latest public release version and everything works as it should. But it did make me curious why one machine has many more entries than the other.

i wonder if it only shows 5 recent updates in the new update GUI history. It'll then replace with the latest one on the next cumulative update with the oldest one dropping out. But then that contradicts what shows on our other machine which lists 7 entries with the oldest one being the feature update.

It may sometimes reset after a new build.

See Nothing Listed in Update History

My update list was blank after turning off/on metered connection. Is this normal? Four updates have since come through and appear on the list.
