Microsoft has released a Start menu troubleshooter for Windows 10 that will troubleshoot and hopefully automatically fix your Start menu problems.

No issues detected, but still, the start menu won't launch.

    Hello SOHO1, :)

If you haven't already, you might see if restarting the computer may sort it if it's just a glitch.

    Hi Brink,

Up until recently I was still on 1703, on a 365 day deferral. Last week I used the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant to upgrade to 1709, and downloaded the latest windows update. So far , so good. All seemed to be running normally.

I then upgraded to 1803. Among some of the other (issues that I will post in the appropriate areas), I found that the Start Menu "Show More Tiles" option is not working correctly.

Here's what it should look like, from the recent 1709 upgrade

I ran the Start Menu Troubleshooter as you instructed. It didn't fix things, but I got some explanations. Is there a way to export a log, or how would you like me to report what it found?

It looks like it may have worked. If you drag the right border of the Start menu over more, does it allow more tiles to show in that direction?

No. The third image shows the limited, and only effect of the setting change; widening the start menu the width of one tile, with no ability to drag in either direction.

Attached is a .pdf of the troubleshooter results. Perhaps you could guide me in the repair.

Hmm, I'm surprised you're not able to resize the Start menu.

You could see if manually clearing the live tile cache may fix the reported issue in the troubleshooter.

If not, then you could see if resetting the Start layout may.

I'm experiencing several odd behaviors since the updating to 1803. I was going to post them elsewhere, but I'm wondering if they are related.

The one thing that helped a little was Reset Start Layout in Windows 10.

Now with show more tiles disabled, I can expand the menu normally by dragging

but if I enable show more tiles. it goes back to this with no ability to drag.

I'm also having problems with Windows Defender advanced scan. Most of the time when I try to go there, I only get a momentary flash on the screen and then returned to the desktop with nothing else happening. It did work two time actually, but that was out of about 50 tries.

Also, I noticed that my windows startup sound wasn't working. Usually that's a result of the fast started option in power being enabled. I had it turned off, but somehow it enabled itself involuntarily. I unchecked it, but still have no sound. But the shutdown sound still works.

I did the upgrade to 1803 with the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant. Could that be the problem?

This all happened directly after the upgrade. In 1709, it all worked.

In that case, you might see if a repair install may help more.

When everything else failed I did a clean install with my original installation disk, and then ran windows update to its completion of 1803.

Nothing else was altered. The behavior is the same. It's apparent that this is a problem cause by 1803.

One good thing happened tho. Windows defender scan now works normally.

However, can someone with 1803 please post a picture of their start menu with "show more tiles" enabled?

    thanks
