A year late to the party but I'm going to ask anyway. I'm on a local account that I set my Windows 10 install with. If I switch to a MSA, does the username stay the same in C:\Users as it was in the local account or does it change to the username to the MSA username or is the MSA username folder added along side the local account username? In my case my current username is MikeO in my local account. I'm perfectly happy with the local account but I'm planning on changing motherboard and cpu and figure I'm going to have problems reactivating the OS afterwards. So from reading I guess I have to link the Digital License with a MSA before I upgrade so the License can be re-applied?

Your username under C:\Users will stay the same. In fact, when I do a clean install, that is the way that I get the username in C:\Users that I want. I create a local account first to get the username John, then I switch it to a MSA. If I do the MSA first, then I get the username johnmh (or something ugly like that).

It is a very good idea to link the digital license for Windows 10 to a MSA. If you don't want to "compromise" your local account, you can also just add a second user as a MSA, even if only temporary for the purpose of transferring the digital license. I would also make sure to convert the second account to an administrator if you create it.

After the motherboard is changed and Windows 10 is activated, you can delete the second user account you created.
