How to Download Offline Maps in Windows 10

Windows 10 comes with the Maps app preinstalled. Maps is your guide to everywhere. Find your way with voice navigation and turn-by-turn driving, transit, and walking directions. Search for places to get directions, business info, and reviews. Download maps to use when you’re offline. Tour the world virtually with aerial imagery and 360 degree street-level views. Plus, you get the same experience across all your Windows 10 PCs and phones.

If you would like to search for places and get directions in the Maps app even when you are not connected to the Internet, you should download maps for offline use.

    Hi Shawn,

I'm hoping you might be able to answer my question as the people at Microsoft Help couldn't .

I downloaded 2 different maps to use offline. I wanted to switch from one to the other but could not work out how to do this. Every time I opened the maps app it opened to the original map I downloaded (Greece). When I tried searching for something on the other map (London) it came up with no results.

Is it not possible to have more than one map to use offline or do you know how I can switch between them?

    Hello Maggi, :)

There's currently no way to change the location that the Maps app shows for your current location, it is based on whatever information is available for your PC. For PC's without GPS or a WiFi adapter, results are obtained using your IP address. Using this technique the results can vary widely in accuracy and can sometimes be incorrect.

The Maps apps should still be able to use all offline maps you downloaded, so you should be able to search within them.

    Hi Shawn,

It looks like my issue was related to Location. I was trying to use offline maps as a portable road atlas. My Location was set to 'Off' as I did not want (or need) the app to do anything other than find places for me.

But it seems the app doesn't like to work without Location set to 'On', as I just tried switching the setting and I can switch between maps now.

I just wish the developers would realise that not everyone wants everything made simple and to have decisions made for them. Some of us still like to use our brains and work things out for ourselves.

    Thanks,

    Maggi

Location would help for the starting point, but you should still be able to search your downloaded maps offline.

I'm glad you got it sorted though. :)

Unfortunately, in my case, the Maps app isn't downloading any maps, and it's not letting me pick any maps (the "download maps" screen is devoid of any choices). I'm also unable to change the storage location of Offline Maps for some reason.

    Hello HoneycombWX,

If you haven't already, you might see if resetting the Maps app using option 1 below may help.

    Reset App in Windows 10

In addition, check to see if there may be a new update for the Maps app available in the Microsoft Store app.

Check for App Updates in Windows 10 Store

If none of the above help, then go ahead and post a screenshot showing what you are seeing instead of what's in the tutorial to see if anything may stand out.

When I do get Offline Maps to download, it downloads real slow in the background (dial-up speed/dual ISDN?). When I open the Settings app to that screen, it downloads slightly faster, but it only downloads at 1/3rd of my connection speed. I thought the speed setting was controlled by Delivery Optimization?

    Hey mate,

Delivery Optimization could limit background bandwidth depending on how it's set, and if from another computer on the local network.

Limit Bandwidth of Windows Update and Store App Updates in Windows 10

It could also have been an issue from the source or your ISP being temporarily slow.
