    Strange:
If I try to rename my computer within the "app" (Settings, System, Info, Button "Rename") then I don't see such a limit.

You are right, through there it allows to enter 260 characters, but accepts only 63, so I guess, that is your answer.

    Online Character Count Tool

Though I wonder, what would be the implications, if you were using a network based computer, e.g. for sharing.

    Confusion about the same names

    I am reading this:
Can I share a folder on win7 to win 10 is this possible ?

    I am quoting this post:
    **************************************************************************************************** **************************************
"I spent over a year successfully sharing folders across networks of XP, Win7 & Win10 computers.

Do all the computers have the same workgroup name? This is essential.

Do all the computers have a common admin user account [same username, same password] on each one of them? It is that username & password you need to enter in the dialog you posted. This has nothing to do with any individual shared folder. It is an overall admin permission to allow access to the other computers. It will only ever appear once if you set the Remember my credentials checkbox.
    **************************************************************************************************** ************************************
But now your saying this should not happen > ?

    Hello Don,

The computer name and workgroup name are two separate things.

Each computer will need to have a different computer name while on the same workgroup.

My understanding is that the only way a windows 7 computer can join a windows 10 peer to peer network and share files was if that they had the same login and same password. LIke Admin and pass Admin.
Like they did away with "homegroup" and that making the compteurs have the same name they could share files. ?

Using the same login name and password on each computer would make it easier to share between a Windows 7 and Windows 10 computer, but you can also use this below with SMB1 enabled in Windows 10.

Between windows 10 comptuers without smb 1

So if we have just windows 10 computers can they share folders and printers without enabling SB1 ? At this point I do not show anything under network on ether one of my windows 10 computers.Nothing shows up. It appears we should not use SMB1 unless we really have to. but maybe their is no way to do a peer to peer without it SMB1 ?

Correct. SMB1 should not be used unless absolutely needed for security reasons.

However, I've found having computers show up under Network pretty hit and miss without SMB1 though.

You should still be able to map a network drive or add a network location to see them in This PC (File Explorer) without SMB1 for Windows 10 computers.

I see you have a second option. Share File or Folder using "Give access to" and under this second option it does not require smb1.

Correct. You can also use "Give access to" to set share permissions.

SMB1 is really only need when sharing doesn't work normally with an older USB network drive or connecting to an older Windows than Windows 10.
