Is the computer still joined to the company's domain?

If so, leave the domain, and see if you are able to change the product key to downgrade to Pro.

If you haven't already, see if you may be able to downgrade using the generic Pro key in the tutorial.

If successful, you can change the key again afterwards to enter your Pro key to activate with.

    Yeah, that's the one.

If you were upgrading from Home to Pro, you could just use installation media to do so using the Pro key to activate without losing anything.

I'm not sure you will be able to avoid a clean install to go from Enterprise to Pro since you getting this error message while attempting to downgrade.

    Win 10 Enterprise

Usable Product Keys for Enterprise downgrade to Pro

Hi, very interested in this opportunity simply to downgrade without having to reinstall.

Background - I got to Win 10 Enterprise when Win 10 was first released; at that time I think I was offered only Home or Enterprise, so selected Enterprise as my upgrade route from Win 7 Ultimate.

From there the Windows authentication process led to the digital signature being installed in my machine.

So I don't have a Win 10 Pro key to use in order to downgrade my setup. I only have my older Win 7 Pro and Win 7 Ultimate licenses available to me.

Can I use one or other of these as the key for a downgrade?

[Background - the reason I want to downgrade is due to problems upgrading to Creators Edition with Enterprise. Microsoft have suggested I reinstall, which I think will mean I need to go back to Win 7 Pro and build forward from there. If it's possible instead to just do a downgrade from Enterprise I'd rather go that way. I think I'm fine from an edition point of view; currently on 1607 and trying to go to 1703.]

Hello wetenhr, and welcome to Ten Forums.

You could downgrade to Windows 10 Pro using the generic key under step 1. You'll still be using the same version that you currently have installed, but you will be able to update to the latest version and build via Windows Update.

When it's finished downgrading, you could try to activate Windows 10 Pro with your Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate key. If unsuccessful, you may need to purchase a Windows 10 Pro key from the Store to use to activate with.

Win 10 downgrade to Pro fixed it for me

Well wow, that all worked for me. After at least four weeks of searching for the answer, this has fixed it!

I downgraded exactly as you said, using the old Win 7 Pro product key. That turned Enterprise into Pro again.

Then I ran the Creators Update via the Win 10 Upgrade Assistant. Worked first time, no problems.

You made my day. Thank you.
