so best off to create a homegroup first - then remove the folder ???

one can then leave the homegroup (through control panel) - without actually disabling the feature ??

Nar, if you leave the homegroup, it'll eventually just show back up.

If you don't plan on joining a homegroup, then it would be best to also stop and disable the services. You can always enable and start them again later if you should decide to join or create a homegroup.

Not sure why. It was consistent for me. Let's see how others do with it.

Just disabling the two services worked for me. I don't use Homegroups. Thanks for the 411.

When I disable those 2 services and restart windows I can't find my PC/other PC's in network folder (just empty folder). Turning them back on immediately shows all network shares.

Not for me, I'm looking in my notebook from my workstation right now, no Homegroup in my Explorer. I just wish it had turned it off in the file selection window too. Make sure the required network discovery and file sharing functions didn't get turned off when you disabled the services.

I tried to change settings in network and sharing center but nothing helped so far. Can you pls share your settings. Both my PC's are in the same workgroup. Maybe something with firewall?

Under Network & Sharing Center / Advanced sharing settings,

    - for Private Networks I have Turn on network discovery selected and Turn on automatic setup of network connected devices checked
    - for All Networks I have both Use 128 bit encryption and Turn on password protected sharing selected.
