Correct, or you could download and merge the .reg file from step 3 in Option 4 to do it automatically for you. :)
I have Windows 10 Home retail build and I thought I disabled the automatic driver install: selected No in the Advanced System settings for Device Installation. Also checked that the registry key for DriverSearching is 0.
Still, yesterday it installed nvidia display driver via windows update even though I did not select it. Why not use the one it offers? Well, because it is old version and a) 3dmark does not accept the driver version and b) there is a bug in nvidia driver that causes some games to have flickering textures. So for the time being I have to use an old driver.
What I did was go to device manager and selected "Roll back driver" for the display adapter. That seemed to do the trick.
Any other options for Home version since gpedit is not available? I've also tried the wushowhide.diagcab, but it didn't find the nvidia driver to hide.
that's the exact reason why I opt for the mod into the windows registry: I installed Windows in english for error and didn't want to download language apck bla bla bla so I decided to install again in the right language directly. Windows only lived for 20 minutes and even with the option from Control Panel disabled it was able to install nVidia drivers!!!
the true story here is that - as it always has been and always will - what MS does only MS really knows!
