So, I followed the instructions (going the Step 9 route, obviously), and when I rebooted, it created me a new profile. Looking at the registry, the new profile path was set to be the profile name, with the name of the PC appended. I modified the registry value to restore the original path, and now everything seems fine - I have my old profile back!
From skimming through the thread, I can see that plenty of other people have had this happen. I was wondering - would it be worth modifying the original post to add this extra step, for those who encounter it? It seems pretty common.
Thanks again for the help - I'm very relieved to be able to have the laptop back the way I like it :)
Great news.
Step 8 is already there for correcting the path, but I'll add to the note to help make it more clear for this. :)
Hi Brink,
I followed these steps for my parents' computer just now. I went through the step where the Registry entry was NOT correct. So I corrected it from Users\TEMP to:
Users\ROGER
Then I deleted the .bak entry.
As other users noted, after rebooting the machine, it now logged in with:
Users\ROGER.ROGER-PC
But here's the heart-stopping part. When I look at the C:\Users\ROGER folder, all the data (Documents, Pictures, etc) is gone.
Have I lost all of their data?
In a panic, I've fired off a System Restore back to a March 14th restore point hoping it would resolve the Registry issue, but is there any explanation as to why their Users\ROGER folder is now empty?
Thanks.
Hello Roger, :)
Unless something has previously happened to your C:\Users\ROGER folder, it wouldn't be affected by what you set in the registry. What you have set in the registry is just what Windows references as the location of the account's profile folder location.
Check to see if the path is currently correct for the ProfileImagePath value of the account's SID key without .bak at the end.
Currently the ProfileImagePath value is:
C:\Users\ROGER.ROGER-PC
Should I change it again back to:
C:\Users\ROGER
?
I can confirm that before I made any registry edits, the physical C:\Users\ROGER folder contained all of the Documents, Downloads, Pictures, etc. files as it should.
It's only now after modifying the registry according to the instructions and deleting the .bak file is that folder now empty. It doesn't even contain the Documents, etc. folders. It just says 'This folder is empty'.
Thanks again.
Nar, there wouldn't be any reason to change it to C:\Users\ROGER folder if it's empty. You might double check to see if the folders in it may be hidden instead of deleted somehow.

Do you see any other folder for your "Roger" account that may have all your files in it?
I can guarantee that deleting any of the SID keys would not delete a profile folder since the registry only references it.
Did you move your personal folders from within your profile folder to another location by chance? If so, that could explain why they are no longer in your profile folder.
