Did that after I was able to move the files (I found out I had to make the new user profile an administrator as well). Checked out for a couple of days. So far, so good: no problems, no temp account message.

Sorry to bother you guys again, but I'd just like to ask. Is it safe to delete now the old user profile folder after deleting the old user account?
Also, can I delete the copy of my old user profile (the one with bak: the one without, ending in 1002 is the new user profile) from Registry editor, or is it better not to touch it?

Yes, it would be safe to delete the old "dell" profile folder and the registry key with ".bak" at the end since they are no longer being used.

I was able to get back on the road by creating the new account. Kudos for helping me and all the others on this.
But now at startup it still takes me directly to the old temporary profile, which is still the administrator. Then if I sign out it takes me to a screen where I can select the new profile, click it and then get into a usable environment. But I cannot make many of the changes necessitated by this event without Windows loading a message box showing the old profile name and calling for a password.
At the register it shows two profiles--longnumberending1004 with the new profile correctly in the SID, and longnumberending1000.bak with the old profile (administrator) in the SID.
I changed the new profile to administrator in the settings but it still loaded the box showing the old profile name and calling for a password next time I needed to do something requiring elevated privileges.
What I want to do is have the new profile working as administrator and then lose the old profile, but I do not want to mess up things again of course. If the startup screen stopped and allowed me to select which user to login, that wold be OK, but it does not; it just goes right into the older profile and creates another "You've been signed in with a temporary profile..." message. The choice is offered only after signing in with the temporary profile and then signing out of that.
When logged in as old profile/administrator there are a lot of things you can't do, apparently because it is a temporary account with limited privileges; this creates a conundrum.
Incidentally, when I look at this computer from another on the network, I find 13 entries under C:/Users. 6 of these are TEMP followed by the name of the computer, not the profile; 1 is the old profile and 1 is the new profile. Does this tell me what the problem was? The register shows only 2 entries now, none of which contain these user names.

What happens when you do the tutorial from one of your administrator accounts to try and fix the account getting this temp profile issue?
Each time you sign in to the account with this temp profile issue, it will create a TEMP folder for it in the "C:\Users" folder. These do not get registered with a SID in the registry since the are only temporary for the current session.
If the new administrator account you created is working without issues, then you could use it instead of the one having the temp profile issue, and either disable or delete the problem account. If you haven't already, I would recommend to see if you may be able to repair the profile of the problem account using the tutorial.
When I have logged in to the new account, if I go to Windows Settings/Accounts/Your Info, it shows only the new account, as Local Account. (When changing it to administrator did not appear to work, I changed it back to Local Account.)
Then I can "switch user" and go in to the old account. Then, if I go to Windows Settings/Accounts/Your Info, it shows only the old account, as Administrator.
It appears that your new local account is not an "administrator" type, but only a "standard user" account instead.

Are you able to perform the steps in the tutorial while signed in to the temp profile of your old account?
Yes.
The old account shows "Local Account, Administrator, Password Protected."
The new account shows only "Local Account."
I am using Classic Shell. I don't have the metro start menu. From either account I can "switch user" and go to the other; when entering the old account I have to enter the password; when entering the new account I only have to click "sign in."
When logged in to the old account it will permit clicking to change another account and then make the new account an "Administrator." Should I? Can both have administrator privileges at the same time?
When logged in to the new account, I can click to change another account try to make that same change, but then it asks for a password, and when I enter the password that works for the old account it returns an error so I go back in and change back to standard.
Ultimately I would like to eliminate the old account. For now, until everything is stable and working properly, I am primarily wanting to have the computer boot to the new account so I don't have to go through the "We can't log in and have created a temporary account" issue every startup.
Can I delete all the TEMP user profiles without creating another problem?
You recommended trying to repair the old problem account using the tutorial. I worked on that for many hours and ended up creating a new account. But I will go back and see if that will work now. One thing I noticed is that I could still locate my documents under the old profile when it was creating temporary accounts, but now those have apparently disappeared; I had backed them up to an external hard drive before creating the new account.
