    Hi Brink,
slightly different issue, but same result. I'll describe:
After one update in summer 2019 suddenly I started getting strange errors as if Windows could not find my data. The first to fail to login was MS OneDrive. I ignored it. Some 2 weeks passed, and I got the login error from your tutorial. I looked and I noticed <user>.000 new profile. I rebooted and the boot went fine. Beeing 2 weeks out I could not undo the update. Apparently MS screwed me over, on some error it created <user>.000 profile and 90% of the time it loggs into it without a problem. The 10% logins do this tutorial error, but simple reboot goes to <user>.000.
Apparently MS moved/copied most of the data to the 000 profile. But not all were moved, and some of the programs like MS own Onedrive continues to look into <user>.
I used your step 11 there is no .baks and .1001 shows the path to <user>.000. The other SIDs show proper paths. The whoami returns the <user> without 000.
Most often all works fine, with some programs I have to manually redirect the program to use <user>.000 for data. The biggest screwup is when working remotely and moving data around I end up sometimes saving to <user> profile instead of going to <user>.000. Clearly havoc.
Of course, MS could not care less - no help from them. Your tutorial is the closest to the solution.
    The bottom line question:
Can I use the step 11 and rename the path back to <user>. Reboot. And simply move the content of <user>.000 to <user>?
Which folders/files not to move? What about the <appdata> folder and alike hidden folders?

FYI: months latter, on another few computers, after doing the Win10 major update, the very first thing I do is checking if <user>.000 was created. If it was, I immediatly am undoing the update (this option vanishes after I think 10 days) and do non-major update and few reboots. After that I allow the major update and every time the <user>.000 is not created.

Hello, and welcome to Ten Forums.

You could use step 11 to change the ProfileImagePath value to the correct path.

I wouldn't recommend to copy anything other than normal files (ex: documents, pictures, etc...) to the profile folder though. I find that trying to copy everything or data files usually end with bad results.

    Thank you.
I have to garner courage to execute.
Could you tell me how to copy/move the regular folder/files from profile to profile without changing the date-stamp on them?

If you copy the files, the "Created" and "Accessed" time stamps will be changed to the current time/date, but the "Modified" date should remain the same.

To be extra safe, I would always recommend to create a system image backup first.

Can you please explain the difference between the path indicated as in step 11, i.e. <user>.000
and the WHOAMI result shown as <user> without the 000?
Where is that substitution setting in the registry? or is it that WHOAMI is reading totally something else?

The WHOAMI results is to get the SID for your account to know which registry key to change the ProfileImagePath value to the full path of the correct user profile folder to use for this account.

Hi Brink, I’ve had my hp computer for about 3 years now and have never had any problems with it until now. Last week I started it and logged on just like normal but it logged me into a temporary account and won’t save anything permanently anymore. It says if I sign out and back in, this could fix it, but I have tried 5 times now and still getting the temp account notification every time I log back in. I would really appreciate it if you could try to help me troubleshoot It. Thanks In advance!

Hello Lucas, and welcome to Ten Forums.

Have you been able to do the other steps in this tutorial to hopefully fix this temporary profile issue?

I’ve opened the Registry Editor and deleted the temp profile and renamed the main profile removing the “.bak” After that I made sure the profile image path was correct. I’m going to try to restart it and see if that fixes it this time, but I have done this 7 times already and haven’t had any luck yet

If you are still unable to sign in to your account without this error message, then you could try using option 2 in the tutorial below to create a new profile for your account to use instead. Afterwards, you can try to copy what you want from the old profile folder to the new one.
