The old account has reappeared at sign in. It is the one loaded and in the middle of the screen. The new account is also there, in the lower left corner, and I have been able to sign in through that and use the computer.

But there was a new problem. When I tried to set up the default printer, I could not complete the process. I uninstalled numerous times and restarted until it did not appear to be present. The printer did not appear in the Devices and Printers window, and the old user account did not appear in the Registry ProfileList. Then I installed using the factory disk. It would proceed to the point where it appeared to be properly completed, but the printer icon was greyed out and would not print a document. When I went to the printer status it showed "offline." And when I click "see what's printing" there are numerous queued unprinted entries. After deleting or cancelling them, uninstalling, restarting, and reinstalling, the same thing happens.

This is a problem because I cannot print from the computer to my printer and so am using a different computer whenever I may have to print.

I wonder if the old account is not causing this problem because last time I entered the old account there was a printer setup message behind the "You've been signed in with a temporary profile..." message. Next time I am at that computer I will try entering using the old account and try to confront the printer issue there. Does that seem like the right approach or is there something else I should try?.

    Hello Squidward,

You definitely would want to solve the profile issue first.

Thank you, a million thanks. This solution got my laptop back running with the correct user account flawlessly, everything was restored back prior to the temp account. I called Microsoft for resolution they escalated the issue to tier2 support to call me back in 2days, but your instructions worked perfectly. This happened to my laptop 04/02/19 9pm right after a windows update

Files Missing- Any Advice on How to Find?

When I first logged onto the temporary profile (before finding this discussion) I rebooted my computer several times to try to fix the problem.

At some point my son and I erroneously thought we had restored my profile, but files were missing. So we searched for the files, and were able to find some of them and transfer them to the desktop of the temporary file.

Now that the problem is really fixed, all of the files we moved to the temp desktop are gone. When searching my PC they no longer show up. Any ideas?

Also, many files I had before this problem occurred are still not popping up on my desktop. Some are listed in "Quick Access," but if I try to open I get a message that says they are unavailable or no longer in that location. But when I search for them I can't find them.

Thanks in advance. Very grateful that someone is taking the time to respond to these questions.

    Hello @JohnBW,

Anything you added to the desktop of the temp profile gets deleted each time it gets signed out of.

If you moved the files instead of copying them, they may be gone for good unless you have a backup at another location to restore from.

Is the original profile folder still there? If so, you might double check to see if the files may still be in it.

Hi Brink, thanks again for taking the time. I guess I'm not sure what you mean by "the original profile folder." I followed the directions for the fix, so I deleted the temporary profile and then renamed the original profile by removing ".bak"

If I understand correctly, the one I renamed is the original profile, so I would assume any folders associated with it are still there. But I don't know where or how to search for them.

When we found the stuff that was accidentally deleted after moving or copying it to the temporary desktop, we were searching for file types: ext.pdf, ext.docx, etc., and then pulling across individual files. I'm sure that many of those were deleted by us. But there are many other files associated with the original profile that we never found. If those still exist, they haven't been moved.

When I open "Quick Access" and look at the list of recent files, some of the ones we can't find are listed, and there is even a thumbnail of them. But when I try to open them or send them to the desktop it doesn't work. I get a message that says "Windows is searching for the file. To locate it yourself click Browse" or "The file is unavailable."

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

    John,

Anything that was moved to the desktop of the temporary profile is most likely gone for good unless you have a backup to restore from.

Correct. The original profile folder would be the one the files were in before all this started or renamed. If the files haven't been deleted or moved, they should still be in the same location they were originally at other than the new name of the profile folder.

You can try and let Windows continue to search for them to see if it may be able to find their new location.

    Doesn't match

Hi, once I got to step 7 I there was no option for profile list however I found the SID number (without .bak) under HKEY_USERS.
So I moved on to step 10, however there is nothing in the right pane.
Please help on how to resolve my issue.
