How does one stop the Mobile Hotspot to disable itself once one's phone is no longer connected to it after some time?

    Hello iDamn, :)

A mobile hotspot will act like any other wireless access point. It will show devices (ex: your phone) as either connected to it or not.

The only true way to disable it is to manually turn off the mobile hotspot. Otherwise, it'll be in standby waiting for your phone to connect again.

Oh yes could be because of university's internet connection would usually timeout randomly and asking for verifcation again. That's why the hotspot could possibly triggered to turn off after not detecting any internet access.

    Thanks, Brink!

Hello mmdd, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

The easiest way would be to use the quick action button in the action center from Option Three to toggle it on and off as needed.

I have been unable to get this to work.

I have a separate thread about my problems which was started this evening, and so far 140 people have viewed it without one single reply providing any help that might assist me in figuring out what's wrong. I'm hoping you might take a look at that other thread, and perhaps think of something I haven't thought of yet.

To summarize, I've enabled Mobile HotSpot on my Lenovo Thinkpad P70 laptop, which is connected to the internet vie wired ethernet cable. So that's the internet connection I'm trying to share with other devices in the vicinity of the P70.

I've tried to get my Samsung Galaxy S10 to connect to the Hotspot SSID, but it eventually fails with a "could not get an IP address" message. I've tried to get my Dell laptop to connect to the Hotspot SSID, but it completes with a "connected, secured, but no internet access" status. And the IP address claimed to be in effect (shown via IPCONFIG) is nothing real. It's not a 192.168.1.* address (from the real main internet DHCP router that the P70 is connected to via ethernet cable). Nor is it something like 192.168.137.* (since the Hotspot IP address is 192.168.137.1 although DHCP IS NOT ENABLED).

So, I don't know what I should be seeing. I only now that two devices which SHOULD be able to connect wirelessly to the Hotspot SSID cannot do so.

Any suggestions? If you have some ideas, please respond on that other thread.

    Thanks.

Ok. I've now solved the problem.

It was my BitDefender Firewall (part of BitDefender 2020 Total Security anti-virus product) which was apparently "protecting me" from outside connection to my computer. I obviously need to code a "firewall exception", to allow the connection to the internal 192.168.137.1 IP address (used by Win10 Mobile Hotspot for that network connection) but haven't quite gotten it specified correctly yet.

In the meantime I've temporarily fully uninstalled BitDefender just to determine (as I now have) that it was actually BitDefender which was the "culprit" here, preventing outside connections to the Mobile Hotspot. With BitDefender fully uninstalled sure enough the connections from both my phone and second laptop now work perfectly.

Note that another user with Norton Firewall experienced the same result. With Norton Firewall active, no connection to hotspot. Turn off Norton Firewall, connection to hotspot is perfect. Obviously a "firewall exception" is needed there as well.

So, without any special additional manual customization or adjustment to settings or anything, simply by following this tutorial's instructions it all works perfectly (as long as your anti-virus / firewall doesn't interfere!).

    Case closed.

Just for closure, I figured out how to code the "firewall extension" for BitDefender. I'm sure there is a similar recipe for other anti-virus products, where the same type of exception is required to allow client devices to connect to the Mobile Hotspot:

    (1) Protection -> Firewall settings

    (2) Push "add rule" button, to produce the dialog allowing you to specify the rule

    (3) On the "Settings" tab, push the "apply this rule to all applications" to "activate universally"

    (4) Select the "Advanced" tab, push the "custom local address" button to "activate", enter the local IP address of 192.168.137.1, and then push the OK button at the bottom, to complete the creation of the firewall exception rule which will now allow client devices to connect to the Win10 Mobile Hotspot.

Use Task Scheduler to run a script that will do so automatically at Windows logon.
