How to Add or Remove 'Share with' Context Menu in Windows 10

information   Information
The Share with context menu makes it easy for you to share individual files and foldersóand even entire librariesówith other users. The options you'll see in the Share with menu will depend on the file, folder, or drive you're sharing and the type of network (homegroup , workgroup, or domain) your computer is connected to.

There are some locations in Windows that, for security reasons, can't be shared directly using the Share with menu. For example, if you attempt to share a drive or system folders (ex: Program Files, Users, and Windows, etc.). To share these locations, you must use Advanced sharing instead.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the Share with context menu and Sharing tab in Properties for all users in Windows 10.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to add or remove the Share with context menu.

Note   Note
This will not affect the Share tab on the ribbon of File Explorer.

The most common Share with menu options are:
  • Stop sharing = This option makes an item private so only you have access.
  • Homegroup (view) = This option makes an item available to your homegroup with read-only permission.
  • Homegroup (view and edit) = This option makes an item available to your homegroup with read/write permission.
  • <User Name> = This option gives read-only sharing permission to the selected user (ex: Brink2). Afterwards, you can remove the user or change the permission level for the user in the File Sharing wizard.
  • Specific people = This option opens the File Sharing wizard, so you can choose particular people to share with.

Starting with Windows 10 build 16226, the Share with context menu has been renamed to Give access to.
