How to Add or Remove 'Give access to' Context Menu in Windows 10

The Give access to (formerly "Share with") context menu makes it easy for you to share individual files and folders—and even entire libraries—with other users. The options you'll see in the Give access to menu will depend on the file, folder, or drive you're sharing and the type of network (homegroup , workgroup, or domain) your computer is connected to.

There are some locations in Windows that, for security reasons, can't be shared directly using the "Give access to" context menu. For example, if you attempt to share a drive or system folders (ex: Program Files, Users, and Windows, etc.). To share these locations, you must use Advanced sharing instead.

The most common "Give access to" menu options are:
    • Stop sharing = This option makes an item private so only you have access.
    • Homegroup (view) = This option makes an item available to your homegroup with read-only permission.
    • Homegroup (view and edit) = This option makes an item available to your homegroup with read/write permission.
    • <User Name> = This option gives read-only sharing permission to the selected user (ex: Brink2). Afterwards, you can remove the user or change the permission level for the user in the File Sharing wizard.
    • Specific people = This option opens the File Sharing wizard, so you can choose particular people to share with.

Starting with Windows 10 build 16226, the Share with context menu has been renamed to Give access to.

HomeGroup has been removed from Windows 10 (Version 1803) and higher.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the Give access to context menu for all users in Windows 10.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to add or remove the "Give access to" context menu.

This will not remove the Share tab on the ribbon of File Explorer, or the Share tab on the Properties page of folders and drives.

I have a question brink. It appears homegroup was removed in 1803. Better late than never i suppose! That being said - my "give access to" context menu still shows "Homegroup (view)" and "Homegroup (view and edit)".

Is this an oversight by Microsoft and left in, or is something borked on my end? If the latter, well hell even if the former - are you savvy enough to tell me how to remove those 2 items since theyre purely aesthetic, err anti aesthetic now? :P

    thanks as usual!

What are the effects of doing or not doing this?
Option 2 [removing] - "5. If you like, you may also wish to turn off (uncheck) Use Sharing Wizard in Folder Options."

    Hello Denis,

Unchecking "Use Sharing Wizard" would also disable "Share with" in the ribbon.

I've updated the tutorial to include this info to help.

Ah. I was concerned that it might be something more profound that took more effort to undo.

I've been working on tidying up my context menus for much of today and that was the last bit. Now I can go down the pub.

    Cheers,
    Denis

    Code:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\Sharing
also removes the 'sharing' tab in a folder's properties window...
