How to Fix 'An app default was reset' Error in Windows 10

You may get a notification that states An app default was reset along with An app caused a problem with the default app setting for xxx files, so it was reset to xxx built-in app.

Basically the file type gets its default association set back to a built-in Windows app instead of the app you set.

This tutorial will show you how to fix and stop getting the An app default was reset notification for your account in Windows 10.

The fix will exclude the Microsoft Edge, Photos, 3D Builder, Zune Music, and Zune Video built-in Windows apps from being listed in the Open with dialog box.

You will still be able to set default programs for Windows apps and file type associations in the Control Panel after applying the fix below.

    Hi Shawn,

Are you able to explain how this works (fixes the issue)?

Hello Kris, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

The blue note box at the top of the tutorial explains what the fix essentially does. Doing this prevents this notification.

    Cheers Brink.

Hopefully we won't have to apply this fix once MS fixes the problem.

Usually, it's caused by an issue with the app or a bug in Windows.

Hello, I'm having this issue and it happens on every reboot. Unfortunately this reg doesn't fix it for me. The OS still resets the default apps that I have set myself, just not to the Windows 10 defaults. Instead it sets them to blank, but the file types still open in the default 10 apps. Crazy that 4 years later this issue persists and there doesn't seem to be a fix anywhere on the web. I've searched all day yesterday and today. Many people are having this issue on the MS and technet forums. It seems the only fix is to clean install Windows, but I've never been one to believe that that's the only solution. MS maintains that it's an issue with our programs or that the programs aren't Windows 10 compatible, but clearly they are. I'm using the latest version of Chrome and MPC-HC, and I just did a fresh install a couple weeks ago.

Hello marcmy, and welcome to Ten Forums.

If you like, you could see if doing a repair install may fix this without losing anything to hopefully avoid a clean install.

Thank you. It may come to that but I was hoping to avoid it as if I do recall I will have to reinstall drivers and some software. I was hoping to find a fix somehow so that this could be solved once and for all, but that may not be possible.

Well, repair install did the trick, and it's as if nothing was even changed. Even driver versions stayed the same. Still a shame it had to come to that, but it was a very painless solution.
