Well, repair install did the trick, and it's as if nothing was even changed. Even driver versions stayed the same. Still a shame it had to come to that, but it was a very painless solution.
    Great news.

I'm building an image for classroom computers that will be logged into by many domain members. Hoping to eliminate the stream of "default app reset" messages for each new user.

Will this .reg file work with Windows 10 LTSC Build 1809? I've added Edge Chromium and the app store (to get the camera app).

I use a couple other of your fixes (restore PhotoViewer and remove Quick Access) and really appreciate your work creating them.

    Thanks in advance, David

    Hello David,

It should still work in Windows 10 LTSC, but it is only applied to the currently signed in user.

Oh that's good to know, thank you for the speedy reply. I should have noticed CURRENT USER in the code.

Are you aware of any other fixes that would modify the default user, so that new users don't have to see the silly errors? It just kills me to have users immediately see error messages on logon, even though they're inconsequential.

    Thanks again,

    David

Normally, you should only see this notification when there's an issue with the current default app.

You might see if the tutorial below for the You have new apps that can open this type of file notification may help any since it's a policy that gets applied to all users.

Disable 'You have new apps that can open this type of file'

My normal practice is to set the default apps I want all users to have, then use dism commands to collect and apply them to the image. The errors appear for a new user, but the default apps I selected are still there anyway.

Like 1 or 2 others have, I can't believe this is still an issue after 4 years!!!!

I recently did a clean install of Windows 20H2 and I received about 4-6 notifications for various extensions, eg. .avi, when Windows did it's final reboot, *BEFORE* I had a chance to install anything.

As yet I haven't applied the above registry "fix" as I stuffed up the install of my printer drivers. Plus some other minor niggles, such as missing ASUS mobo drivers that earlier versions of Window would install but given MS's recent change no longer does so.

Anyway, I'm going to do another clean re-install of Windows so we'll see what happens this time.

    hi,

this thread is somewhat older, but the issue is the issue I am dealing with over and over.

I want to open pdf with Firefox (images with another non-default app... video with...), but no matter what I do Windows keeps resetting to open pdf with Edge. Very annoying.

Is there any news as to this issue? I did not find anything on the webs yet, but maybe on this forum somebody knows a permanent fix for this.

    thanks in advance, regards, Kan
