Update/edit: Solved why the script was returning service not on error. Have to turn on System Restore again after upgrading to Win 10, which I did this evening. Btw, this Instant Restore Point looks exactly the same as the script created by the dearly beloved and missed Karen (Karen's Power Tools - I also use her Reboot and Poweroff).

I'm glad to hear you got it sorted highstream. :)

Karen did some great work, but the script here is original by me. I wrote it back in 2008 and just updated it here.

    Hairy old question:

Any progress on setting System Restore Points via Task Scheduler?

I've just been doing some reading and it seems that many users are still having trouble with this.

Apparently Windows will NOT automatically set an SRP until 7 days from the previous one.

Or is that just a system weakness in W7?

    Hello teckneeculler, :)

I find it still too buggy to rely on using a task for restore points, and prefer to manually create them as needed.

Okay, so it's still a problem.

Cheers Brink, just thought I'd ask

But I find it astounding that something that appears to be so simple turns out to be almost impossible

Cant you just schedule the start of one of these scripts?
What I am currently doing is
Under actions, enter wscript as program/script and the script location eg: "C:\Create Restore Point\CreateRP-Success_Message.vbs" (with quotes) as arguments.

I have a scheduled task to set one daily that uses a small program. You can specify that task so you should get one set. But note that the anniversary update again turns system restore off, as will an in-place upgrade repair.

Then there are well-known issues that arise where trying to use a restore point may fail.

So I don't rely on that and use disk imaging.

    Cannot find System Restore Points

I replied bc I don't see how to create a new question to you...

I followed your instructions on creating a System Restore Point shortcut (all 5). However, even though they look like they are creating a restore point, they can't be found to do a restore. Meaning when I click the shortcut, the HD has activity for about a minute, and the shortcuts that have a confirmation message say they have successfully competed. I just can't find them if I want to do an actual restore. I can create and find restore points I create with the create system restore point program, and find them.

There must be a reason why MS turned System Restore off... perhaps they are working on issues with it.
I agree that a scheduled backup is a better option - and to be safe, make sure to have rescue boot media... just in case the bootloader goes wonky.

Hello Ron, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

After creating a restore point using either shortcut, the restore point should be listed in System Restore like below.
