    Just do a little copy/paste...

    Information
If you're having problems with Windows 10 on your PC, you can try to refresh, reset, or restore it.

By default, here's what happens when you refresh your PC:

    • Your files and personalization setting won't change.
    • Your PC settings will be changed back to their defaults.
    • Apps from the Windows Store will be kept.
    • Apps you installed from discs or websites will be removed. Basically all installed desktop apps.

The recimg.exe command line tool lets you configure a custom recovery image for Windows to use when you refresh your PC. When you create a custom recovery image, it will contain the desktop apps you've installed, and the Windows system files in their current state. Recovery images do not contain your documents, personal settings, user profiles, or apps from Windows Store, because that information is already automatically preserved at the time you refresh your PC. Basically, a custom recovery image is used to let you refresh Windows 10 back to the exact state it was at when the recovery image was created.

I just did this from Shawn's tut.

Yes but being able to reply with quote is better and easier- I just tried a copy and paste and it lost most of the formatting for some reason.

Might be your browser. I'm using Chrome. Sorry, only suggestion I have. :)

Edit: I notice that over on EightForums, it is much easier and the reply with quote options (with a slightly different name) are visible- maybe a setting is different here?
Nar, the quote for the tutorial was dropped since to many people quoted the entire tutorial when replying.

Shawn, is this still valid for win 10? Refresh Windows 8 - Set a Custom Recovery Image as Active

Also, I assume that the next build will set it back?
Yep, it's still valid for Windows 10. I'm working on updated tutorial versions for them here today.

It would be recommended to double check to make sure that the recovery image you want active is still set as active after the next build of Windows 10 has finished installing to be safe.

    Shawn:
I'm testing recimg on Build 10130 inside an administrative command prompt, and here's what cmd is telling me when I try to run it:

Create Custom Recovery Image in Windows 10-w10-10130-recimg.jpg

Has recimg.exe been dropped from recent Windows 10 builds, or do I need to enable the actual administrator account and use it to login to run this command?

    Very interesting!
    --Ed--

PS: Just for grins, I enabled the Administrator account and got no further. Likewise, invoking recimg.exe instead of just recimg did nothing further, either.

PPS: I'm starting to think this is a function of the switchover from .wim-formatted image files to .esd-formatted (compressed and sometimes encrypted) image files in Windows 10. It may just be a format mismatch, and some kind of conversion tool (or an alternate form of recimg) will be required.

    Hello Ed, @EdTittel

It sure does appear that Microsoft has dropped the recimg.exe file in build 10130.

I'm going to get the file from an older build now and test in 10130. If it works, I'll provide a download for it in the tutorial. :)
