Shawn, would it be possible to add a definitive guide, either to this tutorial (or a new one) on how shutdown behaviour is affected by Fast Start. This question is cropping up frequently in the forums and behaviour does seem different with the Fall edition.

My laptop with fast start enabled has always booted in around 11 seconds with any version of W10.

Shutdown has always been rapid (around 2 seconds) with all versions prior to Fall edition. This is using the start menu shutdown option or correctly configured power button.

Fall edition sees shutdown times using start menu increased to those of a restart i.e. around 25 seconds. Using the power button I see the familiar 2 second shutdown. Curiously I also see an indeterminate 12 second or so shutdown using the 'left click' option of the start menu.

With Fast Start OFF the shutdown differences remain. I get a much faster shutdown using the power button (this 12 second or so) compared to the start menu option. Start up is of course increased a little.

So something has changed and many (me included :)) wonder what is going on and what the differences are, and why.
The latest cumulative update (KB4058258) has seemingly altered shutdown behaviour back to how it used be. My start menu shutdown now takes around 2 seconds, down from the 25 seconds before the update.

I just tried it and for me it is taking longer to shutdown than before the CU.

Odd. Both the power button and start menu now give me the old and fast shutdown times. Startup and reboot seems consistent throughout all editions and updates.

I know this is somewhat of an old thread but I just stumbled on this "Fast Startup" option. If I understand correctly when I shut down with it enabled, the computer will still use a small amount of power. So, if I go on a week-long vacation where the computer is at home and unplugged, is it going to drain my battery if the "Fast Start" is on? Thanks in advance.

    Hello CChamp,

That would only be the case if you used Sleep or Hibernate instead of a full Shut down.

Fast Startup is a setting that helps your PC start up faster after a shutdown. Even faster than hibernate. Windows does this by saving an image of the Windows kernel and loaded drivers to the hiberfile (C:\hiberfil.sys) upon shutdown so when you start your PC again, Windows simply loads the hiberfile (C:\hiberfil.sys) into memory to resume your PC instead of restarting it.

Thanks for the quick reply, so if I left "Fast Start" on and just did the Start-Shutdown, and went on a week's vacation, everything would be ok when I got home? Or would it be better to turn the "Fast Start" off until I got back home? Thanks again.

Correct. I would do a Start > Shift + Shut down instead though to make sure it was a full shutdown.
