It's what i did until now. I understand percentages, but in case of high ram they are pretty useless. Trying to find some docs about exact requirements for fast startup feature without success. Plus Interested in gathering some opinions about SSD lifespan from mates here. Is there a thread for that, so i can avoid to open a new one?

How much RAM you have isn't a factor if you should turn on or off Fast Startup. Of course the more RAM you have, the larger the Hiberfile size will be.

Fast Startup requires hibernate to be enabled. If you use hibernate, you will need to have the Hiberfile set to the default size. If you don't use hibernate and want to use Fast Startup, then you could have the Hiberfile set to the reduce size to save space on the drive.

You really don't have to worry about the read/write lifespan of today's SSD's for normal home PC usage. Many will outlast a spinner now.

Shawn, would it be possible to add a definitive guide, either to this tutorial (or a new one) on how shutdown behaviour is affected by Fast Start. This question is cropping up frequently in the forums and behaviour does seem different with the Fall edition.

My laptop with fast start enabled has always booted in around 11 seconds with any version of W10.

Shutdown has always been rapid (around 2 seconds) with all versions prior to Fall edition. This is using the start menu shutdown option or correctly configured power button.

Fall edition sees shutdown times using start menu increased to those of a restart i.e. around 25 seconds. Using the power button I see the familiar 2 second shutdown. Curiously I also see an indeterminate 12 second or so shutdown using the 'left click' option of the start menu.

With Fast Start OFF the shutdown differences remain. I get a much faster shutdown using the power button (this 12 second or so) compared to the start menu option. Start up is of course increased a little.

So something has changed and many (me included :)) wonder what is going on and what the differences are, and why.

    Hello @Mooly, :)

The new shut down behavior is documented in the tutorials below with a workaround. It's unrelated to Fast Startup though.

Win 10 still opening programs after every reboot or restart

    Hi..
I have disabled Fast Startup and Hibernate is off as well...but I still get programs opening up after I shut down or reboot.
If I have opened documents and internet browsers or anything opened and I click on "Shut Down" - after a few seconds Windows 10 shuts down...but, when I restart the PC, everything I had opened prior to shutting down will reopen again exactly as I had it... this has been driving me crazy for a long time now... why won't Windows 10 shut down all the way?... can anyone please help?

    Hello Macster, :)

Fast Startup and Hibernate are unrelated to the new shut down behavior.

    Thank you for that....
I wonder if this is the reason some many users are getting the random freezes.
Ever since i updated to 1709 on both PC's... i get random freezes forcing me to force shut down.

I have updated all the drivers and disabled the OS from shutting down the usb's and have tried a bunch of things I found online...but nothing works...still getting random freezes on both PCs... have you heard about this?

Fast Startup can certainly cause having to restart to actually startup for some.

I was looking for a solution to a problem I had and I found this topic right before starting a new thread. Thanks for the tutorial. In case anyone else has a similar issue I'll leave this here:
If you have an old keyboard one of those with the Power, Sleep, Wake buttons and the keyboard's Power button does not turn on or shutdown your computer, you will have to disable Fast Startup to make it work again. I've just upgraded to Windows 10 and I been looking for days for a solution. In my case, the button wouldn't work even though the BIOS was set (as always) to allow startup of the computer by keyboard with key 98.
