Hey! I've done this and my computer has now been sitting at the go back to previous build for close to 20 hours..... it says it's restarting but my computer has never been able to power down by itself I've always had to push the power button. Not sure what to do, and I really don't want to kill my computer, any advice?

Hello Anna, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

If you still have hard drive activity, then it's best to let it sit until finished.

If not, then you can force a manual restart to hopefully have it pick up where it left off.

Great news. What did you end up having to do?

Since there was no hard drive activity, I powered it off, waited a couple of minutes, turned it back on and it just started normally. :)

Sounds good to me here! I run across some who end up needing to reinstall their programs, drivers, etc. if not ending up with a clean install of the older version when having problems reverting back. At least it went smooth for you there.

    Hard disk activity?

Possibly odd question - how does one tell if the hard drive is active or hung if one's Lenovo laptop does not feature a light to indicate activity?

i attempted today to upgrade from Windows 8 to 10. The upgrade seemed to go okay. I had to reinstall a couple of apps, but no biggie. Things seemed to work, attached external drive to watch a movie, and like 30 minutes in, it just hung up on me. I suspect the default power settings did something, since it was exactly 30 min. Anyway, had to do a force restart since machine wouldn't respond. After that, I discovered that my sound was not working anymore somehow, and couldn't find a way to fix that; so I this time did a proper restart in the hopes it would fix that issue - and after that, I can't get past the screen where it says it can't restart. Tried various options presented there - such as safe mode, clicking Restart in that menu, etc - and ultimately opted to go back to the previous build. That was an hour ago, so a Google search led me here.

so ... I gather from other posts, that this could very well talk a whole day, BUT: should it turn out that my machine is fully hung up and not just taking a really really long time, I'd like to figure that out before too much time passes...

Hello Echoedmyron, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

Without a HDD activity light it's going to be harder to tell unless the HDD is spinner and you can hear it clattering away.

If you have the time, I'd let it sit and do it's thing overnight to see if it finished by morning. If it doesn't, then you may be looking at having to clean install Windows 8.1.

Geez, I hope I don't have to do a clean install. I have so much on here and haven't done a backup in a while.
