    Hey all.

Will they totally remove the control panel in the final build of Windows 10? I still find it very useful in small icon/large icon mode. The settings app seems tricky to navigate. I just started playing around with Windows 10 TP 10125 presently.

    Thanks for this great tip.

Hello heyyahblah, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

It is reported that Microsoft will eventually remove the Control Panel in favor of the Settings app. However, it's not known yet if we will still be able to use the method in this tutorial to access it or not when Microsoft does.

Whatever they call it, I believe it is a good thing to have all settings in one location.

    Hello Brink,

Thank you for the warm welcome, and your tips of course. I am really disappointed to hear this as I thought they would listen to users requests and such as thats why we are participating in the TP versions to make requests on certain O/S features.

The settings APP seems to me like its again more targeted towards a tablet user given the layout and how it is arranged then a savvy desktop user that can navigate around the control panel quickly.

It's great fine that they want to cater to tablets but I mean there is a reason why desktops still exist. The control panel has been good since XP all the way to 8.1 how we have it now.

I was sad to learn in the build I am playing with that the Windows Update has been removed from CP and now its a metro app that I can't control the updates if I want them or not (optional and etc) like in these versions of Windows presently. That is a downer. Then the settings/metro feel seems flaky to navigate. We need quick access to certain things like device manager, system protection in which we already know the locations quickly off the bat, ie. Control Panel > System > System Protection. Done in three steps without keyboard shortcuts or wacky navigation.

I personally don't mind the feel of 8.1, the only thing I changed for it for me was Start8, otherwise I was happy with the O/S.

Windows 10 is looking promising so far, but I hope they keep the classic CP for users that would like a familiar layout.

MS listen to users? Thats a first. Sorry for sarcasm, but old habits die hard.

Thanks for tips on Cpanel Brink, it is an integral part of my use of the pc and would rather not have 10 at all than lose this. What I may do is install 10, when I get the details, onto laptop only at first to see if all these tips, which MS should have left in in the first place, and see if they work. I also used to like the side panel (right) which was an excellent search facility especially when I have lost an image (I have several thousands) search took me straight to it with a click. I presume windows update will reappear when cpanel link is active? Clock ticking ........................................................................................

So far it looks like Windows Update is gone for good in the Control Panel, and will only be in Settings now. If you like, here's a shortcut below that will open directly to Windows Update in Settings.

Right click your desktop and create a new folder. Copy and paste the following in the name box. Click the folder and it will become a control panel icon with all task, that is easy. Eliminates hours of searching for different settings. Thanks Brink.
