One thing that can work, rather than take ownership, is to specifically give your username the permissions you need on the actual files you need to edit/control.

You will need to unhide the hidden administrator and log in as that user, then you need to right click on the files you wish to edit, select the security tab and add the required action to your user name, Full control is normally the one to use.

As Shawn has stated, the system will eventually reset the Owner, but it does not always remove new rights held by a user

Curious about the asterisk in *S-1-3-4.

Later: Nevermind, I see in the icacls help that it is effectively "Just because."
    An unexplained syntax thing.

    Hello,

The asterisk is part of the icacls command to grant the current user SID full access.

The last example below helps provide a bit more on this to help.

I am new to this process. I need to be certain I understand what I am proposing to do.

You are saying that if I take ownership using this process, any current user i.e. any user who can sign in to my LAPTOP, will have ownership rights over the context menus of all users ? Provided that current user has administrative privileges. I am not certain what context menus means. Would the term include User Profile Folders ?

My present problem is inability to delete an old user profile (I will refer to it as old UPr in this reply) which still remains in the Windows C Users Folder. Simple deletion does not work because the old UPr contains a Search sub folder which is in use elsewhere. I cannot find any way to delete that either

I was concerned yesterday to find that one of my current user accounts profile folders was listed in Windows C directory as a sub-folder of the old UPr I checked in Control Panel that the bona fide User Account is still present which it is. The old UPr remains unlisted as a User Account. So I simply dragged, the confirmed User Account out of the old UPr folder.

I really need to get rid of the old UPr. Can you confirm this tutorial will do the trick or at least that it is worth trying and not too risky ?

Many thanks if you have got this far !

    Hello,

A context menu is basically just the menu you see when you right click on an item.

Before deleting the user profile folder, make sure it's not still being used by a user account. If it is, deleting an account's user profile folder will effectively make it behave like a new account sine a new default profile folder will automatically be created for the account the next time it's signed in to.

If you are sure, then you could try an option in the tutorial below first to delete the user profile folder. It only requires to be administrator to delete a user profile folder. If the folder is in use (ex: signed in to the account its for), then it will not let you delete it even if you take ownership of it.

    Thankyou for your time.

This does not work for me because the system does not recognise mjcx2 as a User - it does not appear on
Windows Power Shell list of sids. To be on the safe side I checked the ProfileImagePaths of all the sids in the Profile List again and none of them refer to mjcx2. So I cannot select a User nor a User Profile mjcx2.

I don`t see how it can be signed in - it does not appear in the netplwiz list nor on the sign in page as an alternative to the main administrator local account I use to sign in. I will check it again. I may yet have to do a clean install because it keeps popping up.
And the louis account which I cannot sign into because only my son knows the password is acquiring copies of odds and ends of data. As I said above it had shifted from folder to an mjcx2 subfolder yesterday until I reversed this by dragging it out.

Windows Defender says all is well. So does Malwarebytes Premium. I am at a loss.

Just to note, the user account name and user profile folder name for the account are often not the same.

Just to verify, look at step 6 of the same tutorial below to see if the ProfileImagePath value of each SID may have the path of the mjcx2 user profile folder.

Delete User Profile in Windows 10

If it does, then the profile folder is being used by the account the SID is for.

If not, then you should be able to safely delete the mjcx2 user profile folder using one of the methods in the tutorial above.

Excuse me if I am being dumb but is this not the same process I have been completing ? ie
    Win + R > regedit > HKEY......Current Versions > Profile List > Profile Image Path.
Double clicking on reg file to merge (merge with what ?) does not change the result though it changes the view slightly.
I have tried net user mjcx2 result is not known. It works for net user louis
I tried the Tutorial Find Sid of User - no sign of mjcx2
View accounts Details Tutorial Option 4 returned invalid query
Option 6 said Get WmiObject not a valid command

Have entered commands as carefully as I can. Giving up for today.

Many thanks for input and incredible range of tutorials. Quite fascinating !
