    I also noticed the .exe files I tried it on are actually links, for example:

    C:\\Windows\System32\driverquery.exe
    C:\\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-driverquery_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.15063.0_none_a736a4aecdd85944\driverquery.exe

    I'll have to see if I can take ownership manually of the link. I'm trying to track down when the date information from the driverquery command got messed up. Looks like sometime after the Anniversary update where it still works correctly and now.

    I can take ownership okay but I still can't rename the file so I can replace it with an older version to test with. Any ideas?
    I also gave myself full control, still no help.

    Any chance of making it apply to .exe if the Shift key is held down (Extended="")???

    The file may be in use by the system and not letting you rename it. Does it give you any error messages?

    Did you already try running a SFC /SCANNOW command to see if it may be able to repair the file back to default?

    I'll have to have a play to see if I can come up with a way to have take ownership run elevated and work properly without having it under the Runas key.

    @Rich, :)

    I have updated the .reg files in the tutorial to now use a PowerShell wrapper to have "Take Ownership" run elevated now. This will allow .exe files to have the "Take Ownership" context menu without replacing "Run as administrator".

    Download and use the updated Remove_Take_Ownership_from_context_menu.reg file to remove the old version, then download and merge the add.reg file you want to add the new version.

    The new Take ownership works great, thanks Shawn.

    Still couldn't do anything with the file. I was able to replace it with the older one using Kyhi's rescue iso though. Unfortunately it didn't make any difference, the dates shown by driverquery are still whacked up.

    I'm glad you like the new version Rich.

    Good luck on the drivers.txt file.

    Thanks a lot for this extremely helpful article. To the point. Detailed. Effective. Clean. Perfect. It works exactly the way described :)

    I was frustrated with one file remaining from an old installation of a program, which I cannot delete in any way. The access is denied. I tried all possible ways, safe mode, command prompt, grant permission etc. etc. and still failed every time to get rid of that file. Now with this tool, it took just 10 seconds to complete the task. I am grateful to you for this helpful post

    Thank you very much for this! I was starting to think I couldn't delete a simple folder from my C: being administrator. I wonder why Windows 10 decides sometimes just to not let you delete whatever you want while being the only user and therefore admin of the system.
