    Hi Shawn,

    I have some programs that wanted to install in my Public folders, presumably because of permission issues in Program Files ...

    Being very anal about such things, I installed them in Program Files x86, but I do sometimes get errors unless i run them as Administrator. Would taking ownership fix this?
    Hello Nigel,

    It could, but I would not recommend doing so if all you have to do is "Run as administrator" to give the installer elevated rights.

    Usually, the program should trigger a UAC prompt to request elevated rights if it needs to "Run as administrator" to perform it's actions. This would be the fault of the program developer if it doesn't.

    Shawn, I was using 7Zip to look through a .rar file without extracting and viewing some theming .dll's(among other things), and I just found out that your Take Ownership .reg is being used and packaged with other Theme tools.

    If you want to know which(if you care) you need to ask Edwin where it was downloaded, but when I opened the dll it was original. It's the latest pack that's supposedly compatible with build 10586.36(I didn't load it because it's only for this build, as I tried it in 11082 and it didn't work, and for a single build it's too much a PITA when it'll soon be outdated).

    It must be interesting to see something you have written and how important and useful it is for others, huh?
    I know from using WMP skins how Take Ownership is needed(and everytime SFC is written the libraries must be redone and set to .old or .bac and the theme ones recopied in).

    I found another error in the take ownership reg file that prevented the context menu from appearing on exe files.

    Error:

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\runas]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\runas]
    "HasLUAShield"=""

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\runas\command]
    @=""%1" %*"
    "IsolatedCommand"=""%1" %*"

    Correction:

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\runas]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\runas]
    @="Take Ownership"
    "HasLUAShield"=""
    "NoWorkingDirectory"=""
    "Position"="middle"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\runas\command]
    @="cmd.exe /c takeown /f "%1" && icacls "%1" /grant administrators:F /c /l & pause"
    "IsolatedCommand"="cmd.exe /c takeown /f "%1" && icacls "%1" /grant administrators:F /c /l & pause"

    NOTE: Do not use - causes undesired side effects. See below.

    Hello Intrepid1,

    I'm afraid that it was done by design so "Take Ownership" wouldn't replace "Run as administrator" for .exe files.

    "Run as administrator" would be used more, so I thought it best to leave it instead.

    Yes, just discovered the side effect and was about to post! It also screws up some other commands. Thanks!

    Hi Brink,

    Thanks for this tip.

    I have a suggestion instead of using Administrators group that changes depending on the OS language why don't you use the well know SID?

    • SID: S-1-5-32-544
      Name: Administrators
      Description: A built-in group. After the initial installation of the operating system, the only member of the group is the Administrator account. When a computer joins a domain, the Domain Admins group is added to the Administrators group. When a server becomes a domain controller, the Enterprise Admins group also is added to the Administrators group.

    I didn't test but based on the icacls help it supports the use of sid's
