You could "Dismiss" the notice in Windows Security for it, but I do not think it will stay dismissed.
It doesn't. Windows since v8 developing this attitude of the system knowing better than the admins what is good for them is extremely annoying and a reason to drop Windows altogether. That and obsessive telemetry regardless of what the paying user wants.

Are you using a 3rd party AV program? If so, Windows Defender will usually be disabled by default without any of the warning notifications.

No, in over 30 years of computing I never used real-time AV protection, only on-demand. I used Comodo for on-demand AV checks until recently and even then Windows Defender complained I had no real-time AV switched on, which is why I spent days researching how to completely disable Windows Defender the hard way. It kicks and screams but it is possible. Now that I removed Comodo, I need Windows Defender for on-demand checks and can't kill it completely. If I run out of options, I may look for a script that disables the feature the moment it switches on.

    @ocitp,

If you like, you could use option 2 or 4 in the tutorial below to disable all critical notifications from Windows Security to stop them for when you turn off real-time protection.

Enable or Disable Notifications from Windows Security in Windows 10

You will still see a red x on the Windows Security notification icon on the taskbar to let you know it's off and on without getting an actual notification pop-up.

    Small typo in tutorial

    Hi Brink
Your tutorials are my go-to for anything Windows 10. Great job and much appreciated!

Under Contents towards the top of the tutorial you have the links for the 6 Options.
But the link for Option 6 does not work ... bacause in the body of the tutorial Option 6 is listed as Option 7.

    Thanks.

Really, really stop Defender running (maybe)

I think I've read most of the good advice on these forums, but lately it seems that Microsoft Defender (new name, old antics) really does not want to be turned off. Before I explain how I (may) have done it, you might ask 'why?': well, I miss the old XP-style pop-up start-menu, last seen on Vista I believe. It saved mouse clicks, and allowed me to create nested menus in a hierarchy that made sense to me. Now Windows 10 has the useless '2-levels and that's it' start menu, I have had to abandon it - it can't even manage to auto-popup with 2 levels! But someone some years back explained how to create a personalised toolbar, which can point to a nested folder structure of one's choosing, and it manages to pop-out the sub-folders and items without appearing to overly tax the system. That seems to have worked since Windows 7, and I have been happy with it.

So what is the problem? It seems that no matter how hard I try, I cannot get MD to accept that the folders only contain shortcuts to programs I trust - I can attempt to add them to 'trusted places' or whatever, but if that ever works it doesn't stick. What is worse is that, on opening a folder, it appears that MD insists on scanning each executable to which the scs point, and until it is happy it won't show the contents of the folder. This can result in a delay of many seconds. It rather spoils the point of the snappy pop-out capability.

Now it seems that, once scanned and approved, the scs are OK for a while, but elapsed time, or logging off then on, resets MD and it starts 'checking' all over again. I have lived with that for some years, and occasionally turn off MD and get some respite for a while, bit of course it keeps coming back.

Today I broke! I discovered that W10 (vn2004 at least) doesn't respect my Group Policy setting to disable MD, but just resets it behind my back. I had a good look at the various discussions here on how to disable it, and how long the effect would last, and decided to revert to something I may have tried years ago: I restarted at the command prompt (presumably in safe mode), went to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Platform\4.18.2007.8-0 and renamed 'msmpeng.exe'.

This seems to have done the trick - for now. Time alone will tell if it 'sticks'. As a bonus, I don't think I have ever seen so little RAM usage on startup: 1.3 GB (with all other startup options in TM disabled, just to get the full benefit). Currently running at 2.1GB with Outlook and Firefox (itself a greedy program, even with only one tab running).

So for now I am happy. Hope this helps someone! Martin

Anyway to extend or disable the time it takes for Windows to automatically turn RTP back on when it's temporarily turned off?

Is there any chance of getting Option Six reworked for Windows 11?

As they are now, the reg-edits do not work on 11.

    Hello,

Just to verify, are you able to successfully use one of the other options?
