Simply reverse of what you've been doing when you change the ownership and permissions, then set the owner back to TrustedInstaller.
I've added step 6 to help with this. :)

I've set the owner back to TrustedInstaller for the DefaultMediaCost folder but I'm still getting error 0x80070643.

    Hi Brink,

I've got a bit of a problem, I decided to set the registry back to non metered for testing purposes using the provided reg file but I'm still getting the above error when manually checking for new updates.

    Have I broke the reg?

Did you restart the computer afterwards to apply the .reg file?

If so, then manually update WD definitions in WD to see if it may clear this last one, and work in the future.

Yes, I restarted after applying the reg file. I've updated WD manually again but WU still doesn't want to download WD definitions.

I'm not sure what else to suggest other than to double check to make sure that the owner of the keys is the default "Trusted Installer".

    May I give a suggestion?

Open Registry Editor and navigate to :-

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MpSigStub
Look at the value data for DropLocation, it should be C:\Windows\Temp\xxxxxxxxxxxxxx-Sigs. If it is correct, open the Temp folder. If you find it difficult to access, run Notepad as administrator, open the Temp folder and clear the xxxxxxxxxxxxxx-Sigs folder. Try updating WD through WU.

You've just saved a lot of panic. This has fixed it. What was the issue in there do you think?

People are having issues getting Windows Defender to do definition updates scheduled through task scheduler and it's mainly affecting the AU update. Do you guys know about this?

For me WD opens at scheduled time but does nothing. It's also annoying this way as it opens WD and interrupts any full screen programs in use. May look at 3rd party AV...

    Update downloads over metered connection

    Brink,
Found your tutorial and used it successfully to set my metered connection after upgrading to W10 from W7. Needed this because of a pitiful 20Gb/month, slow satellite connection. Now have a new satellite with ten times the speed, and also 35Gb peak, 50Gb/month off peak, so I would like to download updates off peak whilst keeping the metered connection. Problem is, I can't find any download button in my updates settings page, nor does anything appear for me on the Windows update site. All I get there is descriptions of what the updates are about. Any ideas?
    Regards,

Hello Slatey, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

When you click on "Check for updates", you should have a "Download" button when there are available updates found by Windows Update to download and install.

Usually, you'll at least have definition updates for Windows Defender available everyday though.
