You could try setting up netplwiz again to update it to see how it does afterwards.
Did that and no improvement. On another thread I changed Settings/Accounts/Sign-in Options/ bottom of list Restart Apps set to Off, for a different reason. It cured that other problem and changed this one. Now on logon empty boxes for user and password appeared with a message to use Other User. Put in MS account again and Welcome etc appeared followed by full desktop and specified StartUp apps

The craziest thing is that this desktop is one of the latest models (2020) with quad processor, SSD, high end graphics card, 34" monitor etc. Its 2017predecessor is single, slow, CPU with HDD, onboard graphics etc that I leave in place, firing it up once a week as a backup. It has the same OS build and just quietly gets on with things. It slowly updates itself to all the Win 10 changes and has never ever failed to bring up the single browser or exhibit any of the update and configuration faults of this one.

    Go figure!

Question - why does netplwiz/Manage passwords not list any Web Credentials? In Edge/Settngs/Passwords there are lots!

Netplwiz only manages the account password for signing in to Windows.

I am wondering if it is the signing in that is causing the problem of not being able to get rid of the password requirement. I reason like this:
This problem (see message #234 ) started after a big update recently. Up to then I could switch on and not have to enter a password. After that time I have had to. The obvious way was to use the recommended Restart method of MS Account.
But, I am sure that when I set up the install I did as normal for me and used a local account. I have been assuming that switch on every day has been as I first established it, but I now wonder.
Is it possible to get a different response in netplwiz depending which logon was used? If so, how to get the password requirement unticked box to refer to the local and/or MS account? (I can see which account (local or MS) is actually running now having deliberately changed to local that appears in Settings/Accounts Your Info. )
Final question, why is the account name on the Start Menu all in lower case whereas the User Account is named using a mixture? It wasn't like that before!

Not sure, but about all you can do is setup netplwiz again with your password to see if it will automatically sign in your account again at startup.

Right, here we go! (By the way, Tinker Bell did change the font case on my name for me overnight!)

Lateral thinking time - I logged in as Other User, which in 3 decades of Windows I have never seen before, and got to my local account. Then I went to netplwiz and ticked the box requiring login that after clicking Apply, sent me off to sign out and sign back in. No problem. I got the right user without problem. All nice and tidy so far.

Now comes the tricky bit in this thought process. I will go back to netplwiz (NetworkPlacesWizard?) and uncheck the password box, still in local account. I anticipate that will ask for password again before allowing me to apply the change, and then restart, or I will have to initiate restart. Then if i am right the OS will be updated specifically for the account in play at the time. Wish me luck - I will update later!

I updated to 21H2 recently and a friend asked me about the auto sign in and I looked at mine and it needed the registry entry to add the check box back even though I still had auto sign in fine. But what I noticed was my whole netplwiz is just all grey and does nothing anymore including make new accounts or change their group. Is this just normal now? I can still do it though the settings app but that is clunky and slow and I always use netplwiz or cmd for clients normally. I also have a fresh install of 21h2 sitting next to me and it still functions so I'm just wondering what I broke.

I found those problems and eventually a way to get it working correctly.
The file name is an acronym for Network Places Wizard and originally came from Vista. Like much of Vista, adaptations of earlier Windows applications was poor and it still lacks much in the way of explanation. In my opinion it does not gell well with the other settings applications in Win 10. I found two major faults with it when my desktop suddenly demanded that I had to login when for months I had been accustomed to not needing to do so.

That happened after a major set of updates required a restart. The restart showed the login screen instead of going straight to Windows desktop as normal. As I don't have a PIN, the system offered to allow me in using either a MS account or a local account. As I remembered the MS one, I used that. The next time I switched on it didn't auto login! I went to netplwiz and found that the box was still unticked! As you can see from my messages here, it took a lot of suggestions and trials to sort it out and nobody could think of why it happened. Finally a trial I dreamed up worked and this is the cause of the problem.

netplwiz changes are apparently stored individually for each admin account. I had been using the local one when I originally unticked the box. At one point in the following months I must have switched to the MS account various times but that didn't matter until a specific update requiring several restarts was installed and so the system decided I should use the expanded MS account to restart login. As I had never changed netplwiz when logged in with that account, restarting with it had to be manual.
I didn't realise that so when I opened netplwiz it was showing me the box unticked for the local account, not the MS account. It isn't obvious!

As there was nothing else to change I didn't bother with Apply, but just went straight to OK and the wizard closed. Wrong!

So that is my guess as to what then kept going wrong! Only when I logged in manually with the local account did I get the "right" netolwiz file and the tabs/buttons were all active. I unticked the box and that time clicked Apply FIRST which gave me fresh boxes to enter the local password before pressing OK actually incorporated the saved changes in the file.

One important extra point - to make it all work I first had to tick the box for the active account, untick it and do the Apply/OK routine. Then Shut Down and restart with the local account, Then use netplwiz again and tick then untick the box before Apply/password/OK. As I use the same User Name for both accounts, netplwiz doesn't look any different! The only (necessary) difference are the passwords which don't show there.

Enabling auto login at switch on is easy - just untick the box. There is hardly anything else that can be done as the Advanced tab only has options that are better accessed elsewhere. I guess that most people would

I always have used option 1 on my main PC at home. I just did a clean install using 21H2 and the check box is no longer shown. Any chance there is a way to re-enable the option? Thanks

    Hello,

Double check the items in the note box under step 4A in option 1 to see if one may be the reason why the check box is not there.
