I had the PC setup to not require signin when switching on. A week or so ago it changed and now I have to every time!
Unfortunately when reinstalling Windows from scratch I foolishly entered a PIN. And it is that I have to use. So none of the instructions given her seem to apply. I have not switched on Hello (stupid idea!) but still can't seem to get back to the way I used to have it. Its even worse than that! Now it wants the PIN after the display wakes up again !
Not sure if this will help you but I installed a clean copy of Win 10 today and this is what I did. It worked OK.

    Code:
    I modded

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\PasswordLess\DevicePasswodLessBuildVersion

from 2 to 0 and all was good again. Then run NETPLWIZ and set up no password access.

    Hello,

Just to verify, did you already try setting up netplwiz again in option 1 with your password (not PIN)?
I couldn't work out how to get rid of the PIN! so assumed that the password was no use.
I will try your suggestion and get back.

Should I get rid of the PIN first? I would like to see the back of that but the MS instructions are no help.

Oh no, netplwiz will only work with a password.

You don't have to remove the PIN to use the password with netplwiz though.

If you really want to remove the PIN, you can try an option below.

I used the method to Remove PIN - very vague as having gone through the steps the message about PIN being recommended is still there! So it looks as if nothing has actually changed!
Then I went back to netplwiz and the box was still unchecked, so again, it looked as if nothing had changed!
To be on the safe side I checked the box and then unchecked it again so that the Apply box came back. Then the login box came back and I used the MS name and password.
Switched off, switched on again, and it logged me in without using password or PIN - Hurrah!

Thanks for advice, but what a muddled system!

As a footnote - it is very necessary to be able to get the PC working without knowing the login details, or PIN. Take me for example. If there comes a time when I am incapacitated in some way, my granddaughter will need access to my computer and all its files for such data as bank account, medicine ordering and medical help etc. Online shopping account too of course.

Years ago I showed her where the power switch is and my Excel sheet with about 105 rows of email and other account information. That is all she would need to get started. The only sure way for her to actually use a Windows login code would be to write it down on a Post It stuck to the monitor!

MS frequently send messages about security and not writing passwords etc down anywhere! In an emergency that just ain't sensible

    Tony

PS Now I have to wait and see what happens when I jerk the monitor back into action after a pause!

    Great news Tony.

I would recommend to keep a book with all your passwords and sign in details written down in for such a situation. You can keep it in a safe space where you and your granddaughter will know in case needed.

Talk about keeping a dog and barking yourself!!!
I keep a computer for the express purpose of NOT trying to write things down and then find the right envelope again!
My email client has over 5GB of saved emails going back over 25 years just to make sure I can find old information with a simple Find box.

Well, sometimes you need to keep something written down just in case.

    Drat it

What happened was that when the display woke up from moving the mouse, it demanded a login using my MS password!
Together with an admonitory note telling me I should really have a PIN. (It didn't do that before the crash and reinstall.)

    Now what?

Is it something to do with this screenshot?

Double check to make sure you have require sign-in on wakeup turned off below.

Hello Shawn now I have been keeping my passwords on Google Keep for a long time now rather than trying to keep having to writing them down in a book. In your opinion do you think doing what I do is safe enough? I only ask because I am constantly changing passwords and am not that organised enough to keep a book where I can find it as I have machine in different rooms?
