    two wrinkles

    First, I had a new W10 20H2 installation...

Sign in User Account Automatically at Windows 10 Startup-windows_version_524x204.png

It was set up as a Microsoft account (as opposed to a "local account"), and, yes netplwiz.exe aka control userpasswords2 was missing the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" checkbox by default.

The fix for this is in the other, companion tutorial Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts. However...

Wrinkle 1 - Windows Hello skipped

However in my case, Windows Hello was skipped during the initial startup.

Thus, Sign-in options page in settings then looked like this:

Sign in User Account Automatically at Windows 10 Startup-windows_hello_on_and_grayed_out_hilit.png

Note that "Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts" is both ON and GRAYED OUT.

It instructs to "Set up Windows Hello to change this setting."

Yes, set it up so you can turn it off.

So, I did, and gave a pin number, I then could turn "require Windows Hello" off on this screen as the companion tutorial instructs. And then I got my "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" checkbox back in netplwiz.exe aka control userpasswords2.

I did not try it but I suspect that if I had tried the registry fix (option 2) in Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts it would have also worked, without setting up Windows Hello.

    Wrinkle 2 - Local Account

I also wanted to note here that if I change my login to "Sign in with a local account instead" ...

Sign in User Account Automatically at Windows 10 Startup-windows_local_acct_bigger_anon_hilit.jpg

the section "Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts" is entirely missing from the Sign-in options Settings window as you can see blow:

Sign in User Account Automatically at Windows 10 Startup-windows_hello_not_there_hilit.png

So, you can't turn off "Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts" meaning that netplwiz.exe aka control userpasswords2 will not have the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" checkbox and you can't use option 1, the settings option, in companion tutorial Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts to fix it.

You can fix it with the registry fix (option 2) as in the companion tutorial. I verified that.

You can also do this laborious fix. Assuming you're currently logging in as a local account:
    1. In Settings - Your Info do: "Sign in with a Microsoft account instead". Go through all the password prompts. You would have to have, or make, a Microsoft account at this point.
    2. Sign out and log back in.
    3. In Settings - Sign-in options, now the "Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts" will appear. Turn it off
    4. In Settings - Your Info - go back to "Sign in with a local account instead". Go through all the password prompts.
    5. Sign out and log back in.

Now you should have your local account and netplwiz.exe aka control userpasswords2 should have its "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" checkbox

    Hi Everyone,
I hope everyone is having a decent year so far & staying safe, I haven't posted here in the forums for a while now but now I've ran into a issue I need help with. I've got my windows 10 pro computers setup to automatically log me in, but I'm still having to view the welcome screen that shows my name & the rotating dots. I feel like there's some way to boot directly to my desktop without having to view any other screen beforehand, can someone please advise me what to do to get my computers to function like this ? I'm the only person that uses these computers, so password security isn't a factor. Thanks in advance for any & all advice that's offered. Stay Safe !

    Hello David,

I'm not aware of a way to remove that quick flash of the user on the sign in screen while the user is being automatically signed in at startup.

Usually, it's just a very quick flash unless something (ex: update finishing) is slowing it down to cause seeing it longer with the spinning dots.
