How to Apply a Folder's View to All Folders of Same Template Type in Windows 10

While browsing folders in File Explorer, you can apply the view settings of the current folder to all folders on your PC that are optimized for the same folder template type.

For example, the Pictures folder opened from This PC is optimized for picture files (Pictures template) by default. If you open this folder and change the view layout to Medium icons, you can apply the Medium icons view to every folder that's optimized for pictures.

This tutorial will show you how to use 'Apply to Folders' to apply a folder's view to all folders optimized with the same folder template for your account in Windows 10.

    Here's How:

    1. In File Explorer, open the folder (ex: Pictures) that you want to apply to folders optimized of the same template type.

    2. Customize this folder's layout, column width, sort by, and group by view to how you like.

    3. When finished, open Folder Options from within this same folder. (see screenshot below)

    4. In Folder Options, click/tap on the View tab, and click/tap on Apply to Folders. (see screenshot below)

If you opened File Explorer Options (aka: Folder Options) from the Control Panel instead, Apply to Folders will be grayed out.

If you have This PC or a library open, Apply to Folders will be grayed out.

    5. Click/tap on Yes to confirm. (see screenshot below)

    6. Click/tap on OK in Folder Options. (see screenshot below step 4)

    That's it,
    Shawn

I respectfully suggest that "or This PC" should be removed

AFAIK, the instructions apply to any folder under "This PC", including other partitions, and any external drives that are currently attached. Or maybe I've accidentally wiped all permissions

Or maybe my "This PC" is different from other people.

    Hello OldGrantonian, :)

Sorry for the confusion. It was meant to let folks know that "Apply to Folders" would be grayed out if you have a library or This PC open.

I have reworded it in the tutorial to help.

Hi Shawn, thanks for your response :)

I'm sorry - I don't understand what you mean by that. I can't suggest any alternative text, because I don't know what you're trying to say :)

After some trial-and-error, I now know how to change folder options. Procedure 1 below shows my initial failed attempt, which caused me to visit this tutorial. Procedure 2 shows how I succeeded in changing folder options.

    Procedure 1:
    - Click Libraries > Pictures
    - Click View tab > Options
    - In Folder Options, Click View tab
    - "Apply to Folders" is disabled

    Procedure 2:
    - Click This PC > Pictures
    - Click View tab > Options
    - In Folder Options, Click View tab
    - "Apply to Folders" is enabled

    Basically:

This PC < Pictures is having the Pictures folder open instead directly from "This PC".

This below is what I meant that "Apply to Folders" is grayed out.

    - Click This PC
    - Click View tab < Options
    - In Folder Options, Click View tab
    - "Apply to Folders" is disabled

In my case, it's enabled :)

To add to the mystery....a shot just like what Shawn did. This PC open, and still available....

It looks like you opened Folder Options from within the Documents folder instead of This PC though.
