    Hi,
The tutorial works in 1903? I did it but I still have "Frequent places" ::
    1 Desktop
    2 Downloads
    3 Documents
    4 Pictures
Am I missing something? How to remove these all?
    Are they showing as pinned?

Yes, they are pinned, got it, if I unpin they are removed, but that must be done manually? not possible via registry or a batch file?

Here's a couple of options below you could use as a workaround depending on what would be best for you.

Reset and Clear Recent Items and Frequent Places in Windows 10

Enable or Disable Pin and Unpin Items on Jump Lists in Windows 10

Thanks, this is weird, I think no way, both of those wys did not unpin those automatically, but I found an interesting fact:
If you unpin manually they will be gone. Now after unpinning them try:
    Reset_and_Clear_Recent_Items.bat
Inside the file, second del command:
    del /F /Q %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations\*
This will not run, at least 2 files in that folder never get deleted, but also don't give any error, I think immediately after removing they are restored.
However, if you remove those 3 files, they are not removed or restore immediately, and then all those pinned items in Frequent places (Explorer > File) will be restored!

Looks like it would be best to manually unpin them.

Yes dear Brink, I just shared the strange behavior of deleting that DIR, that's nothing important, thanks many times, you're so kind :)

do we by chance know how to disable or enable a specific filetype from showing in recents? for example Im trying to get regfiles to show in my recent documents but i dont know where the string or list is kept omitting particular filetypes.

(curious what else is omitted by default as well for down the road )

i know this can be done via filetypesman from nirsoft. I'd just prefer to not rely on third party software and know what its editing for obvious reasons :)

I try to stay AHEAD of the future headscratchers these days lol

    nm, gottem.

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\regfile]
    "EditFlags"=dword:00000000
    will allow it

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\regfile]
    "EditFlags"=dword:00100000
will block it (or editing the same dword under presumably any other filetype but .reg is the only one ive come across blocked by default so far)

I read and executed the options 2 and 4 in first posting and executed the Registry Scripts (for current AND all users) to turn off all recent documents.
I verified in Registry Editor that the keys were really set.

Then, after a week or so, I re-visted the folders:

    C:\Users\pet\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations
    and
    C:\Users\pet\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations

and found new (!) entries from the recent days.

So the provided Registry scripts from tenforums do not work (any more?).

Maybe there is a new settings which prevents Win10 from disabling recent link creation even if the disabling values are set?

Maybe the Registry Settings do not work any more in Windows 10 21H2?

I even followed the suggestions in

How to disable the display of recent searches in Windows 10's Search Box - gHacks Tech NewsFind out how to disable the display of recent searches that you ran when you open the search box on a device running Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system.

But the do not work either.

Any other ideas that really, really work?

    Hello Peter,

These locations are used for other items other than recent items and frequent places.

Are these new items showing up in the recent and frequent areas like in the examples at the top of the tutorial?

    Hi Brink,

    I am confused.

First of all I disabled a long time ago Recent List and Jumplist FEATURE.
But that means that only that recent lists and Jumplist are NOT shown.
It doesn't mean that the recent file link are not saved.
From my point of view these recent links are currently stored but not used by the Recent+Jumplist feature.

    These are different things.

I don't want that other people could track down and investigate which files I have used and touched recently.
They should not be created AND NOT be shown!

Secondly I you talked about "used for other items other than recent items and frequent places."
Hmm, all these links are stored in the folders you mentioned in your first posting.

"....our recent items and frequent places are stored in the folder locations below.

    %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Items

    %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations

    %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations

So are these folders for Recent and Jumplists or not?

Assume they are NOT for Recent and Jumplists: For which feature/function are they otherwise?

How can I disable the creation of them?
They should be empty ....forever(!) At least after shutdown
