How to Manage Apps, Games and Media Content Restrictions of Child Member in Microsoft Family Group


A family group helps families stay connected and keeps kids safer on Windows 10, Xbox One devices, and Android devices running Microsoft Launcher. It's free, and it's one of the many benefits of having a Microsoft account. With the settings on family.microsoft.com, you can get reports on a child's activity, set screen time limits, check on a child's location, limit which websites and games they can access, and require your approval to purchase from the Microsoft Store.

Once you set up your family group, you can add or remove child and adult members.

The content filters you set determine what your child can get from the websites they visit, which games they can play, or whether they need adult approval to buy from the Microsoft Store. Content filters include three settings: Ask a parent; Apps, games & media; and Web browsing. You set the rules, and you decide when to break them. Like with screen time, your child can send you exception requests for content that you can respond to through email or on account.microsoft.com/family.

You can block kids' ability to purchase and use inappropriate apps, games, and media on Xbox One and Windows 10 devices by setting an age limit for content. Anything rated above that limit will require adult approval.

You can block inappropriate websites on Windows 10, Xbox One, and Android devices running Microsoft Launcher when you use Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge browsers.

Here's How:

1. Do step 2 or step 3 below for how you would like to manage your family settings online.

2. As an adult in the family, go to the Microsoft Family website, sign in with your Microsoft account if not already, and go to step 4 below.

3. Open Settings in Windows 10, click/tap on the Accounts icon, click/tap on Family & other users on the left side, click/tap on the Manage family settings online link, and go to step 4 below. (see screenshot below)

4. Click/tap on the Content restrictions link for the child member you want to manage. (see screenshot below)

5. Turn on or off Block inappropriate apps, games & media under Apps, games & media for what you want. (see screenshot below)

6. If you turned on Block inappropriate apps, games & media, select the age limit you would like to apply to your child in the Allow apps and games rated for drop down list. (see screenshots below)

You can click/tap on the View allowed ratings link to see the Allowed content ratings for the standard content ratings for the age limit you set for your child.

7. You can now remove (if wanted) apps, games & media from the Always allowed and Always blocked list. (see screenshot below)

If your child downloaded something before you set these limits, you can block it where it appears on the Activity page. They’ll need your permission to use it again, and you can respond to their requests from your email or on Microsoft account | Your family.
