How to Change Maximum Storage Size for Recycle Bin in Windows 10

The Recycle Bin provides a safety net when deleting files or folders. When you delete any of these items from your hard disk, Windows places it in the Recycle Bin and the Recycle Bin icon changes from empty to full.

If you have multiple hard drives, partitions, or an external hard drive connected to your PC, each location will have its own $Recycle.Bin and Recycle Bin settings. Removable drives, such as USB flash drives and memory cards, will not have a Recycle Bin. Files deleted from removable drives are permanently deleted.

The Recycle Bin will store deleted files until the maximum storage size for that Recycle Bin location has been reached. When this happens the Recycle Bin will automatically permanently delete (empty) older files in the Recycle Bin location to make room for the newer deleted files.

If you like keeping all your deleted files in the Recycle Bin as a safety net, you can increase the maximum storage size for the Recycle Bin.

This tutorial will show you how to change the maximum storage size for Recycle Bin for only your account in Windows 10.

    Here's How:

    1. Right click or press and hold on the Recycle Bin, and click/tap on Properties. (see screenshot below)

    2. Select the Recycle Bin location for the drive (ex: C ) at the top you want to change the maximum storage size for. (see screenshot below)

Size: 17.8 KB

    3. Select (dot) Custom size, set the maximum size in MB (1024 MB = 1 GB) for storage you want, and click/tap on Apply. (see screenshot below)

The default maximum storage size of a Recycle Bin location is about 5% of its space available.

Size: 14.1 KB

    4. Repeat step 2 above if you have another Recycle Bin location you want to change the maximum storage size for.

    5. When finished, click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below step 2)

    That's it,
    Shawn

It's not practical to set this via registry since each volume is assigned a unique GUID with no easy way of knowing which drive they are for. MaxCapacity is the DWORD for this setting.

You could use mountvol to get the GUID. For example to set C to 5000MB
    Code:
    $Size=5000 # Size in MB
    $Volume=mountvol C:\ /L
    $Guid=[regex]::Matches($Volume,'{([-0-9A-F].*?)}')
    $RegKey="HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\BitBucket\Volume\"+$Guid.value
New-ItemProperty -Path $RegKey -Name MaxCapacity -Value $Size -PropertyType "dword" -Force
