How to Add or Remove Extract All Context Menu for ZIP Files in Windows

When you right click or press and hold on a .zip file, the Extract All context menu will extract all contents in the .zip file into a new folder and opens the new folder.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the 'Extract All' context menu for .zip files for all users in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

You must be signed in to Windows as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

    EXAMPLE: "Extract All" context menu

    Here's How:

1 Do step 2 (add) or step 3 (remove) below for what you would like to do.

2 To Add "Extract All" to Context Menu of .zip Files

    This is the default setting.

    A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

    Add_Extract_All_context_menu.reg

    Download

(Contents of .reg file for reference.)
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CompressedFolder\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\{b8cdcb65-b1bf-4b42-9428-1dfdb7ee92af}]
    @="Compressed (zipped) Folder Menu"

3 To Remove "Extract All" from Context Menu of .zip Files

    A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

    Remove_Extract_All_context_menu.reg

    Download

(Contents of .reg file for reference.)
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CompressedFolder\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\{b8cdcb65-b1bf-4b42-9428-1dfdb7ee92af}]

4 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

    That's it,
    Shawn

    Hello Dave,

Something may be wrong with the file type association for ZIP files. If you like, you can try downloading and merging the .reg file for the zip item in the table of option 2 below to restore the default associations and registry entries for ZIP files.

On Win11*, Remove_Extract_All_context_menu.reg doesn't work for me. Searching the registry, I found ...

    Code:
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.zip\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\{b8cdcb65-b1bf-4b42-9428-1dfdb7ee92af}]
    @="Compressed (zipped) Folder Menu"
... but for some reason, I can't delete it, even running RegEdit as admin. (The MS unzipper doesn't preserve dates properly, so I installed 7Zip - but I have a bad habit of not making the extra click to use it.)

    * I would have posted this on elevenforum, but apparently there's no equivalent thread there.

FYI, I've now tried both RegDelNull64.exe and PsExec64.exe from SysInternals, and still couldn't delete the key I mentioned above. I ended up taking Ownership as Administrator to all of [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.zip], removing all inherited permissions, and denying access to Everyone. Obviously not an ideal solution, but it's working for me.
