Somebody, please help. I tried to do step 2 on the first option to fix windows apps problem, but after that the start menu and cortana won't work. I can't even open the windows settings anymore. When I tried to open sticky notes which is pinned on my taskbar it said explorer.exe Class not registered. And when I tried to boot into safe mode I got explorer.exe Unknown hard error. I tried to do in place upgrade to fix it but still not working. Is there a way to fix it without reinstalling windows?

    Hello,

Usually if a repair install can't fix it, it's time for a clean install of Windows.

    I agree with @Brink . . .

If you go down this route, I would also advise [ Recommend ] that you Export [ Backup ] your Drivers . . .

    I hope this helps.

The Windows Store app would open and crash after a few seconds. Option one Step 3 was the only thing that worked after trying many other fixes.
Great work on this post Shawn!

    I put it in

    PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted -Command "& {$manifest = (Get-AppxPackage *MSPaint*).InstallLocation + '\AppxManifest.xml' ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest}"

    but it keeps saying:

= : The term '=' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct
    and try again.

    + & { = (Get-AppxPackage *MSPaint*).InstallLocation + '\AppxManifest.xm ...
    + ~
    + CategoryInfo : ObjectNotFound: (=:String) [], CommandNotFoundException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : CommandNotFoundException

Hello Keith, and welcome to Ten Forums.

It looks like you are running the command in PowerShell instead of Command Prompt.

    Hello,

There's really nothing you can do to stop the "in use" if it's an app used by the system. Otherwise, you could try restarting the computer, and try again.

    Hello. Thanks for answering.

But since this process is a reinstallation, does this mean that these apps are removed without being able to be reinstalled?
The ones it shows me that are in use:
