    Hello,
    I've been trying to use audit mode to customize our Windows 10 image. (Enterprise, Build 10586). We use SCCM to deploy the image I build in VMWare Workstation, and I use the SCCM capture media which runs its own sysprep, reboots, then captures the WIM to my external hard drive. Copy profile (start menu and search) is still broken when I use audit mode and run my capture. We don't use MDT, so that's not an option. Since Kari's method has us running sysprep, is there any hope for me? Thanks!
    I've not used 10586 since mid November, currently running all editions of build 14295. In this build the CopyProfile works, no issues with Start and Search, although the road has been jumpy; for instance in 14257 you could not even get to Audit Mode.

    I am unable to answer you before I do some tests, finding an "old" 10586 ISO and testing sysprepping it in Hyper-V. Can't promise any specific timeframe but I will try to test this during this coming weekend.

    Hey Kari,

    Thank you for your reply and for all the helpful info provided here. Is it safe to use a build newer than what I have now? It looks like everything after 10586 is considered a "preview" build and you have to sign in as an insider to receive it? I would be happy to use the newest build but it comes with the warnings that it may break things :) Also, is going from 10586 to the newest considered a "large upgrade" and would then cause sysprep to error out? (I know that major OS upgrades are a no-no with sysprep)

    Thanks everyone for all the information. I'm just now jumping into using sysprep and I had two quick questions about the answer file.

    1. I'm trying to set the OOBE to not prompt and instead set the sysprep image to just automatically login to Windows 10. I was successful at getting OOBE NOT to prompt to create a user account and instead have Windows 10 automatically login to the admin account with a set password. Is there a way to get the OOBE's Customize screen to not even show at all? I saw settings while I was creating my answer file, but OOBE still prompted. Should I just remove /oobe when i run sysprep?

    2. I'm trying figure out how to customize the taskbar as well as remove the store icon. Again I saw links you can add in the answer file, but they didn't work for me and setting the StoreTaskbarIcon to false apparently was ignored because the icon is still there. From what I understand sysprep cannot remember settings for your start menu and taskbar so I figured there might be a way to do it in the answer file.

    I guess these are questions more for a answer file tutorial so if you do have a tutorial about everything answer file let me know. Thanks!

    Yes, all builds after 10586 are Insider Preview builds. To get them automatically you have to join the Insider program, however when you have an Insider build install media you are allowed to install it at your own risk to a non-Insider machine.

    The word Preview is the key here; by joining the Insider program and using Preview builds you accept the fact that there might be issues. I've had (almost) none, I am using build 14295 on all my real and virtual machines, but that does not mean that the issues do not exist. Although I am a hardcore Windows 10 and Windows Insider fan, always upgrading the day new builds are released, I do not recommend using anything else than the official released versions of Windows 10 in a corporate environment. At the moment the last official version is TH2 version 1511 build 10586.

    There's nothing "no-no" with Sysprep and major upgrades. Windows 10 can be upgraded to new builds even when it has been sysprepped.

    To completely skip both machine and user OOBE you need to set the values like language (region), computer name and such in answer file, as well as create the users in answer file. Read this Microsoft TechNet support article for more information: Settings for Automating OOBE

    So my problem is before I Sysprep. While editing the Star menu I am getting inconsistent results. If I change the default layout modification file, new profiles will get all the links but they will be separated into a pair of three tile wide sections. One with the three URLs + IE and one with the four non-internet related programs. If I use the local GPO to override this, it simply lops off the right section and only shows the URL. However if I then update the date to the XML file the GPO is pulling from and log the user back in everything loads correctly (this does not happen with the default profile since it does not reload).

    I am using the current release build (TH2 version 1511 build 10586). This is my layout file:

    <LayoutModificationTemplate Version="1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/LayoutModification">
    <LayoutOptions StartTileGroupCellWidth="6" />
    <DefaultLayoutOverride>
    <StartLayoutCollection>
    <defaultlayout:StartLayout GroupCellWidth="6" xmlns:defaultlayout="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/FullDefaultLayout">
    <start:Group Name="Programs" xmlns:start="http://schemas.microsoft.com/Start/2014/StartLayout">
    <start:DesktopApplicationTile Size="2x2" Column="0" Row="0" DesktopApplicationLinkPath="IE" />
    <start:DesktopApplicationTile Size="2x2" Column="2" Row="0" DesktopApplicationID="URL" />
    <start:DesktopApplicationTile Size="2x2" Column="4" Row="0" DesktopApplicationID="URL" />
    <start:DesktopApplicationTile Size="2x2" Column="0" Row="2" DesktopApplicationLinkPath=PROGRAM" />
    <start:DesktopApplicationTile Size="2x2" Column="2" Row="2" DesktopApplicationLinkPath="PROGRAM" />
    <start:DesktopApplicationTile Size="2x2" Column="4" Row="2" DesktopApplicationLinkPath="PROGRAM" />
    <start:DesktopApplicationTile Size="2x2" Column="0" Row="4" DesktopApplicationID="URL" />
    <start:DesktopApplicationTile Size="2x2" Column="2" Row="4" DesktopApplicationLinkPath="PROGRAM" />
    </start:Group>
    </defaultlayout:StartLayout>
    </StartLayoutCollection>
    </DefaultLayoutOverride>
    </LayoutModificationTemplate>

    As you can see the programs and URLs are mixed, so I have no idea why Windows is sorting them separately. If I can get this part to work consistently I should be able to get everything else working with Sysprep. But I've spent hours trying to resolve this particular issue.

    I would first try if changing the URL references from DesktopApplicationTile to SecondaryTile would help.

    Instead of...
    Code:
    <start:DesktopApplicationTile
              DesktopApplicationID="URL"
              Size="2x2"
              Row="0"
              Column="2"/>

    ... use SecondaryTile to pin an Edge shortcut to URL
    Code:
    <start:SecondaryTile
              AppUserModelID="Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe!MicrosoftEdge"
              TileID="TITLE"
              Arguments="URL"
              DisplayName="TITLE"
              Square150x150LogoUri="ms-appx:///Assets/MicrosoftEdgeSquare150x150.png"
              Wide310x150LogoUri="ms-appx:///Assets/MicrosoftEdgeWide310x150.png"
              ShowNameOnSquare150x150Logo="true"
              ShowNameOnWide310x150Logo="false"
              BackgroundColor="#FF112233"
              Size="2x2"
              Row="0"
              Column="2"/>

    I have similar experience than you, getting better results (Start more or less as planned) with SecondaryTile Edge shortcuts. I have no idea why.

    Also for better functionality if pinning any Windows Store apps / Universal apps use Tile with correct AppUserModeID instead of DesktopApplicationTile. An example pinning Edge:
    Code:
    <start:Tile
              AppUserModelID="Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe!MicrosoftEdge"
              Size="2x2"
              Row="0"
              Column="0"/>

    Other than that I have no idea why your tiles will be regrouped. I have to test this quite a lot more before being able to say anything more.

    Can either of these be used with Internet Explorer? No luck yet finding a usable AppusermodelID for it. I have a couple of important sites that must be run in IE, so I've implemented methods of setting IE as the default browsers for new users, while power users have the option of using Chrome. Which obviously causes me more grief when it comes to tiling as Microsoft assumes you will be using Edge for everything at least initially.

    I am very sorry about this being the only answer I am able to give you now:

    As far as I know, based on my own experiments, using Edge URL shortcuts is the only way to get Start layout work as you have planned. All my tries using a third party browser, even IE, have failed.
