    Hi Sir Essende,

SLR, how to use install.esd in Windows System Image Manager?
You cannot use ESD file in System Image Manager. You need a WIM file.

You can convert the ESD file to WIM as Essenbe told above:

Hello and welcome to the Forums.

An install.esd should work. However if you need an install.wim file instead try this tutorial, Convert ESD file to WIM using DISM in Windows 10. I hope that will help you.
You can also download a WIM based ISO file instead of MEdia Creation Tool ESD based ISO. See Option Two in this tutorial on our sister site Elevn Forum: Download Official Windows 11 ISO file from Microsoft Tutorial | Windows 11 Forum

    @Kari

I have followed one of your guides in the past regards answer files and sysprep but I am stuck with this.

I have download USB version of Windows 22H2 64 bit which creates a bootable USB with an install.esd and not the usual install.wim that I am used to seeing.

Currently in Audit mode still and have downloading .ISO option. Intend to overwrite the USB stick with the ISO version and make it bootable using diskpart on another PC because I guess this one will not obviously boot without a recognisable USB so I don't want to shut it down until I have changed the type.

Hopefully, I can then proceed from 5.2 of your tutorial.

When I tried dism to convert .esd to .wim I got Error 112 which said insufficient disk space but it is not correct. I have 20Gb left on USB stick.

.esd is located in E:\sources so I created E:\ISO_Files. I am sure a .esd and a .wim can exist in the same folder.

This is the code I used:-

    Code:
    dism /Export-Image /SourceImageFile:E:\ISO_Files\install.esd /SourceIndex:6 /DestinationImageFile:E:\ISO_Files\install.wim /Compress:Max /CheckIntegrity

Just copy the Windows 10 iso direct with install.wim rather than using media creation tool. You do this by spoofing browser it is a different device.

How To Change User Agent in Microsoft Edge

Then you can download iso direct from same download site (keep the developer page open).

PS - it may be a while before you get a reply from @Kari, as he has been very ill and hsas been undergoing intensive medical care. So please do not think he is ignoring you - I know it frustrates him not being able to participate as much as he would like to.

    Oh Christ! That's terrible news.

I figured that the post had not received a hit in over a year so response would be possibly unlikely.

This is minor to be honest. I'm up and running.

I just hope he gets well soon and hope it's not something serious like sepsis.
