    If SFC could not fix something, then run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the sfc /scannow command up to 3 times with Fast Startup turned off and restarting the computer after each time to completely fix everything that it's able to.

    If not, then run the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command to repair any component store corruption, restart the PC afterwards, and try the sfc /scannow command again.

    About - If not, then run the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command to repair any component store corruption, restart the PC afterwards, and try the sfc /scannow command again.

    Are you aware of any need to be connected to the internet for Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth to succeed?

    I am still investigating but, because it was not a factor that I noted at the time, I cannot be certain until another WD platform update messes up & SFC detects the resultant hash mismatches.
    - I had already completed fixing my computers after today's WD platform update before I realised that this was probably a factor.
    - I certainly found references in the CBS.log, during a very long & tedious manual examination, to using Windows update as its vehicle for retrieving replacement files from an update.microsoft web address.
    - But CBS has already removed all entries for the day I know I tried to use Dism but it failed to fix things [the CBSPersist log entries for that day have also been removed]. So I have nothing to compare today's successful fix to.

    Hello Denis,

    No worries. You do need to be connected to the Internet to run that command in Windows 10.

    The "/online" switch in the command is just saying you're running the command in the running Windows 10, and not at boot outside of Windows 10 which would be "/offline" instead.

    Thanks for replying. It does look like the internet [WU] is required as a source of replacement files.

    I can understand the logic of it but it had never ocurred to me before. WU acts as a default source when DISM ... /RestoreHealth /Source:nnnnnnnnnnn is not specified.

    I've found confirmation in MSDocs of the need for Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth to be run whilst connected to the internet.

    Both Bree & I had separately found references to WU internet addresses when examing the DISM records in CBS.log - for example, https://fe2cr.update.microsoft.com/v6/
    and we tested the command's ability to repair a known fault when not connected & then when connected {to the internet}. It only succeeded when connected.

    In Repair a Windows Image - Microsoft Docs underneath the heading To repair an image, it advises
    If you do not specify a /Source for the repair files, the default location for Features on Demand is used. For more information, see Configure a Windows Repair Source.
    and that linked page confirms that WU is used as the source
    Choose a Repair Source, Use Windows Update ... , para 1 -
    Windows Update will be used by default

    I can follow the logic of this but it had simply never ocurred to me before.
    - If SFC has been run but been unable to repair a faulty file then the component store copies of those system files must also be corrupt.
    - Without an internet connection to WU, Dism has nowhere else to look for good copies if no other source is specified.
    - So it's a case of online or bust.
