    Hi to all.

I still having this annoing problem with shared printers.

I have done all the fixes suggested but only solved the default printer change with network printers.

The user that share a printer lose the default printer in any case when another user print on this shared and it turn immediatly default printer only for the user that share the printer.

The printer shared is a label printer without network port and all was working very well before this , in my opinion, unusefull improve.

All user have the " not manage default option" , win 10 pro but seems that "default option" do not effect at all with shared printers.

It is clear that is a very bad working for the sharing printer user that have to check every time what the actual default printer.

any suggestion or is is a win 10 bug ?

    ciao

    Rick,

The update most likely reset the setting back to default. There had been a few lately that has done this.

If it's still turning itself on after doing the options in this tutorial again, then use the Find and Find Next feature in Registry Editor (regedit.exe) to search for all LegacyDefaultPrinterMode DWORD instances, and make sure each one found is set to 1. You may have one at the HKLM location as well.
I finally figured out that everytime I sign in with gotomypc, it changes windows back to let windows manage my default printer. They have agreed with me that their program is causing my problem, and are working on a fix.
    Have a GREAT day!

Thank you for sharing your findings Rick. Hopefully, they'll get their program patched soon.

This is my work computer. This has happened once before and I switched off the "Let Windows manage my default printer". Then: I could not print the my most used spreadsheet from Excel 2003. I could not print it as a PDF or a JPG. It would not print!

So I switched it back to the ON position and it still would not print for a few days. It just happened to work after about a week. And yes, I rebooted my computer many times to no avail.

It just started to print again out of the clear blue.

So today I am working in our works database program and out of the blue, the printer I used yesterday and ever since that problem above, happened again! Windows 10 changed my default printer to a card printer instead of the 8.5 x 11 printer. Explain that?!?!?! I did print off a card just before but I didn't make any changes to my default printer. But Windows 10 decided I wanted to use a Card printer for an 8.5 x 11 inch page from another program.

Hello epsroaks, and welcome to Ten Forums.

That would most likely be why.

When this setting is turned on, it makes your default printer the last printer you used.

Update on the Mystery On / Off Switch printer not work & Windows 10

    hey Brink,

Well that makes sense. Why didn't i think of that? And thanks for explaining that, yeah i feel like a DUH

Alright, now the big mystery, I turned it off before but that caused a problem with one specific Excel 2003 Spreadsheet, it just would not print regardless of how i saved it as. Could it be something with the Program EXCEL 03 itself working with 10? But why, it's a Microsoft product, they should all get along, right? I was able to print off other spreadsheets and docs from Word and Publisher files also 2003 versions.

So it's corrupted maybe? No, it isn't, it worked after a few days out of the blue but only after I switched the OFF back to ON 'Let Windows Manage my Default Printer'. So i am a lot leary of turning it off you see. (What did I do that caused it to work again? )

This is what took place in the OFF position: for whatever reason, well I have an HP 8630 all in one printer, (and it isn't 4 months old yet), it just would not print after i turned that switch to the off position. We received and sent faxes from it and made copies, but it would not print from any of my PC programs. (oh it print from cell phones, and yes it is also hard wired USB) I got a pop up saying there was a paper jam. But there wasn't a paper jam. there wasn't any paper where paper wasn't supposed to be. WHAT?!?!?!...Okay...well...i gave up. Next day, tried again, nope, would not print that spreadsheet just like before. A pop up telling me there was a paper jam. So i tried the following: I took the paper drawer out, took out the paper, re-stacked it, said a prayer, put it back in the drawer ensuring it was flat and positioned properly. Slid it back into place and low and behold it printed. ( this sounds like i'm making it up, i promise you i am not.)

I don't want to go through all of those steps if I don't need to. It's time consuming. Brink, what's the answer? (I never had trouble like this before the upgrade...no i can't go back, we are a nonprofit, small, funding just isn't there to spend that kind of money again.)

    epsroaks,

As a test, you might set up the printer on the network using an Ethernet connection to see if it's recognized and prints properly.

That would make too much sense if they created a GPO for this inconvenient default setting.
